Can you handle looking at dirty/crooked/disgusting teeth? I mean really disgusting teeth.

I dont think anyone enjoys it, but you have to learn to tolerate it.

Disgusting teeth are nothing! How about disgusting feet? I hate feet! OB-GYN's have it rough too. My uncle is an OB and the horror stories he brings home, i'm super straight! Everything on the human body has potential to be disgusting, that's why there's doctors (i'm including dentists in that because we all really are doctors) to try and make things "less" disgusting.🙂

"Dirty/crooked/disgusting" most of us won't have a problem. What about the smell of perio disease, abscess or ANUG? Hope nobody has a sensitive nose!😀

First, if there is anyone who is going into dentistry who cannot handle it, then they are in the wrong profession.

Next, looking at disgusting teeth sure beats having to look at and probe the southern orifices. Not to offend the ladies here, but from what a couple OB/GYN's I know have said - I couldn't handle some of the disgusting things that women have to deal with vaginally. It would take the mystique away from it and I probably lose some interest in my wife because of it.

I always wonder that. Who thinks I want to be a proctologist or a GI specialist or a urologist, or even an OB/GYN (though there seems to be a lot more of that) when I grow up... especially when there are so many awesome fields in medicine.

I recently did some volunteer work with Texas Dental Association Mission of Mercy and saw some crazy messed up stuff. A lot of people we helped had meth mouth, exposed roots, multiple broken teeth, and etc… many of these people hadn’t brushed in years… Maybe I am odd, but I actually found it all really interesting and had a blast. Most of my experience shadowing dentist had only included the average stuff…root canals, crowns and fillings. So to see these challenging cases, and actually get to assist on them because it was volunteer work, it was awesome. I didn’t really smell anything, even in the screenings when I didn't wear a mask, but I am sure it smelled “nice”!

Also, to add to the thread... I’ve always thought the whole OB/GYN thing is an odd choice for a male doctor. I could do it if I had to, but I am sure I would need a therapist afterwards. haha!

And that is why you will rock as a dentist, while the OP will not.

In the end it is just color and objects, who cares what it is. you can adapt to anything. I am not sure if the OP has really decided if they can become a dentist or not.

Come on, PChem, we all know that a dentist's future is entirely based on comments they make on SDN. This site makes or breaks you!
