I have been lurking for a while and decided to join. I am from Ontario Canada. I graduated nursing about 4 years ago. Initially in UG my mind was on med the entire time and I decided to do nursing instead of science to have a career as a backup. My GPA is 3.7. in 4th year I applied to med in Ontario only. Wrote the MCAT late to have maximal study time. I was shocked to end up with a 27. On all practice tests I was in the 30-32 range. Obviously had no chance in Canada. I started to work to pay bills. 2years into work I still had my heart set on MD (my dream is family med or Obgyn). I was working full time and started to re study for the MCAT which was tough because I also started doing a research job on the side for med apps. Worked 50-60 hr weeks. Was less confident and scored a 28. Didn't apply that year except to McMaster as I had a 11 VR and they only look at that. Rejected pre interview despite my decent GPA, work experience and research experience. Was going to just give up and go NP. my partner really encouraged me to keep going as it really is my dream job and besides NP jobs are limited where I live. I thought Mac is my best chance since they like non trad types and Canada has many issues with in province and even some regional preferences within Ontario. Since Canada does NOT limit amount of MCAT rewrites, I decided what the h*** let's try to ace VR and make a strong app for Mac. I did ace VR but blew psych completely. My total was a 501.
I could in theory try a 5th MCAT since Canada doesn't care and apply country wide although I am disadvantaged as a person from Ontario with no rural roots and no aboriginal roots.
I am now thinking DO in Michigan with the Canadian initiative or SGU.
I know my history shows poor standardized test scoring but let me assure you I have fantastic work experience, received nursing awards in my hospital for patient care and even a student teaching award last year, my research will have me on two pubs this year, I also do volunteer in my community. I have also published an educational handbook for RN students - I know it's not a big deal like a scholarly journal.
So where do I stand with my 3.7, best MCAT a 28 but most recent 501.
I have read on here that 4 retakes is basically application suicide and I should forget the U.S., MD or DO.
THANKS!!
