Has anyone here done the Canadian DAT ?

I ask because I got my package with the soap carving kit, but the soap is very crumbly, and it does not allow clean cuts. It just crumbles. Is this the way the soap always is, or is it just stale.

Also, anyone have an idea if a US school will care if I miseraby fail the carving section ? I know its not on the American DAT, but I'm sure it will still look less-favorable.

the soap should be fine, ure not meant to CUT, u're meant to shave.
they don't look @ it. however, it still looks bad if u don't do well.

it's like if u write an awesome paper, but it got wet in the rain and your dog gave it a lil naw and u handed it in....it sucks, but reality is that probably your prof will give u a slightly lower grade, even though your content is great...
well if you get 28's for all sections and a 3 for carving...it'll stick out 😱

reality bites.

i might hafta take mine for the 3rd time in feb, i know i can do better...just didn't study the 1st time, didn't study EFFECTIVELY the 2nd....
just gonna wait for more rejections to roll right in.

most likely you were sent old soap that dried up. Happened to moi. I'm guessing it is a very very pale green, right? Before it turns dry, it is a slightly more waxy consistancy and a slightly darker shade of light green. As mentioned above, don't make any big cuts, try shaving more. Work slowly and don't get frustrated.

Hey,

I agree with you that it does take patience, but we obviously need to outline our shaving with marker..right ?

But the permanent marker does not stay on. It's impossible. Is there something better that I can buy from the store to help me carve ?

In the DAT is the soap cylindrical or cubic ?

For the official DAT, it will be cylindrical (identical to the one from the kit except might have better consistency). I suggest that you should only use what you will be provided on the actual DAT so you know how to handle under the real situation as you are not allowed to any other extra tools. For the DAT all you will be supplied with are:

1 green cylindrical soap
1 black marker
1 pencil
1 exacto-knife
1 plastic/flexible ruler

If you have the practice kit, then you should have all these in there.

biotechie:

i didn't do stellar @ all @ DAT's, but i know what I WILL do that will help me, if i need to take it in feb.

-use american DAT books to study (i just randomly studied from my old textbooks...bad idea), but just skip out math & orgo
-carve LOTS LOTS LOTS
-do lotsa practice tests

as for carving - yeah, the sharpie sucks. u gotta clean the tip if it gets waxy and carry on. it's like that.

they don't let u bring ANYTHING into the test, aside from an eraser...
they give u a pencil w/ eraser, sharpie, soap and exacto....so don't bother trying to use a better pen to write with, cuz they will only let u use the sharpie.

gdluck..
btw: i go to st.george
gpa sucks. 3.29 (according to aadsas)
DAT sucks: AA 18. PAT 21, carving 16
applied to: columbia, penn, temple, howard, maryland (rejected), BU(interview), tufts, creighton, VCU, pittsburg, case, nova, nyu, ubc, western

Hey,

Those scores are not too shabby. I'm sure you'll get into at least 1 school.

I plan on applying to Pacific, BU,UDM,UB,Columbia,Toronto, Western

I have a 3.6 GPA, and have yet to write the DATS. I think I have a strong application, so as long as I don fu** up the test, I think I'll get in somewhere

UofT last yr didn't offer interviews with ppl lower tha 3.61 (is what they have on their website).

r u applying this yr? it'll be hard in the states, cuz i applied "LATE" and i applied sept 3rd! ...it's cuz they give out acceptances dec 1...and then i assume it's rolling from then on
why not nyu?

as for canadian schools...i know western doesn't look @ anyone's stuff until the deadline.

Hey,

No, I am not applying to this cycle.

I doubt I will get in somewhere in Canada. And with rolling admissions in the US, I have a better chance considering I will get my app in bu the first week of June.

I was thinking of applying now, but I called all of the schools and they told me i I dont have my app in by Dec 1, my chances were slim.

I forgot about NYU, I will probably apply there also. It matters how I do on DAT. If I do really well, I will probably apply to less schools. We'll see how it goes.

Anyways, g/l to you on this cycle, you'll get in somewhere!

i did the canadian DAT. I can tell you, most US schools don't give a rat's about carving so long as you did well in AA and PAT...i got an interview from every school i applied to except the ones I withdrew from after getting into my first choice American school.

woa woa..getting your aadsas sent in by june is fine..lets not go nuts here. even july is ok. august starts to get a bit late..but many many ppl get in who apply in october, november and even december. lets not forget about that.

i've got leftover soap for sale if anyone's interested,.. excellent condition guaranteed,.. $12cdn per 3,.. and if you're in the greater toronto area, ill deliver it personally,.. email me at [email protected]

=====

,.. and you're absolutely right favabean,.. pale green soap is definitely dried up,.. biotechie, contact cda by phone and notify them that you'll be sending the package back for an exchange,.. enclose a letter with the package detailing why

I have to agree with Fruity - apply in May! Sure, July and August aren't the latest months to apply, however, take my situation for example. I applied Aug.15 - my application was sent out Oct.6. Now that is LATE, if you ask me. I won't have any interview b/f Dec, which means I won't be a part of the first wave of acceptance. So, do not wait. You have to factor in the time it takes for AADSAS to actually process your app., then send it out, then the schools have to review it (along with many other apps.). Apply early early early. Being too relaxed about it can cost you alot!

And to all the canadians out there...best of luck!
