hey,
does anyone know what a canadian specialist earns? if it makes a difference, i'd probably be looking at mtl or tor. i've tried googling it w/ little luck. thanks alot.

Note those figures are gross, rather than net; so they don't include overhead. Many specialties have overhead ranging from 30% - 50% of the figures you see there.

Why are Quebec's #s so much lower???

there fee per service is much lower than other provinces.

I am a quebec resident but I am studying in Toronto, so if I go to doctor I have to pay them and than I get back the fee that a Quebec doctor charges. That is one way to make sure their health care system doesn't collapse. Also cost of living in Quebec is (was till 2 years ago) cheaper then that in Ontario or BC.

Also since most quebec students only pay ~2000 a year tuition (8000 for a medical degree) compared to 18k a year in Ontario, it is fair for the first few years.

But anyway.. that I would check if those figures are still the same now. That has changed in the last couple of years. The numbers are from 2001-2002.

also keep in mind, that some specialties do not report figures...

for example a group of radiologists may give the number they took together but it is hard to discern what each one is paid, or how many are in the group...

in Ontario: IM (319) makes more than Gen Surg (319) and more than Anesthesia (242) ...LOL....that is soo funny. That doesn't even come close to how much an internist vs. gen surgeon vs. anesthesiologist makes in the US. Anesthesia > Gen Surgery >>>>>> IM

I agree, I don’t think those figures look quite right. Why did they put thoracic/cardiovascular surgery? Is that figure referring to CT and vascular or just CT on its own?

I think the "IM" category refers not only to internists/hospitalists but also high paying fields like cardiology, gastro, endo etc.

If the specialty is ophthalmology or dermatology, earnings from non-covered services (e.g. cosmetic procedures) are not included in the CMA figures.
Re: taxes, certain provinces allow physicians to incorporate and be taxed at a much lower corporate tax rate.

An attending told me the other day he makes around 400 K a year, with 3 months of vacation. He's an ER doc, practicing for over 10 years now in Québec. Hard to believe ? Maybe. Truth ? Well, seeing his house, or shall I say ''mansion'', I'd say he's right.

The salaries aren't as '' low '' as people make them out to be. Anyway, anything over 100 K is a bonus imo 😎
