Hi, I'm a Canadian student and a third year.

So here are my stats:
1st year GPA 3.3
2nd year GPA 2.7 (yes i know...)
And planning to do another year of undergrad so I still have 2 years to improve my overall GPA.

By the time I apply in 2014 June, my overall extra curriculum experience would be:
200 hrs of research lab experience (co-written an article), 100 hrs of school hospital volunteer work, 50 hrs of dentist shadowing and an additional 40 hrs of volunteer work (mostly community centre work for kids).

I plan to write the American DAT this summer (NOT Canadian DAT) because I really don't see a chance of getting into a Canadian dental school.

If I manage a GPA of 3.7 for the next 2 years, and have my overall GPA of 3.35
will I be competitive enough to get into US dental schools?

If there are any Canadian students that can give me some advice, that would be great.
Thanks!

Since you are an international you should have at least 3.5/ 21+. If your gpa is a 3.35 it will be tough and your list of Canadian friendly schools will be small, most likely just BU or NYU for a real chance. I have seen a lot of Canadian students on SDN lately, which school are you currently at? A lot of Canadians at BU are from the ontario universities.

I go to UBC. Are there any other Canadian friendly US dental schools to recommend?
Also, how much time should I spend on the DAT? I was thinking 3 months studying app 6 hrs a day would do it? Thanks

Im a canadian applicant and got in this time around. applied twice - my stats aren't stellar (3.54 cgpa,19dat), but have lots of ECs, finishing my masters and tons of dental experience. if you dont get in right away, id recommend grad school if dentistry is really what you want. i was surprised this time around cause i still never heard from the canadian friendly schools NYU and BU. I got interviews at buffalo, minnesota and USC.. so add those to your list. For studying for the dat..definitely review as much as you can and get your hands on as many practice questions you can. watch chads videos for chem..they were helpful. my dat AA was 19 but realized i had to write it a month before i wrote it...bad planning on my part. 3 months should suffice. good luck. if you have any specific questions PM me.

Hey, no need to worry, you had a rough patch the first few years, but you have time to turn it around. My GPA in first two years was similar to yours due to some unforeseen circumstances, but I worked hard in my last 3 years, I switched into a competitive program and pulled off close to 4.0 in last 3 years, and did pretty well on the DAT. I applied pretty late but still got interviews where I wanted. So, you still have time, make the MOST of whatever is left of your undergraduate education. US schools take a very holistic approach, they don't just look at your GPA, your trend and the courses you took etc. also make a difference. PM me if you have more questions, or need help deciding which schools to apply to.

Also, it's good that you have good EC's especially research (focus more on that). However, keep in mind: your grades come FIRST. If you have mediocre EC's you can volunteer for a year and make up for it, but once you have mediocre marks in higher years, there's no turning around.

Good to know i am not alone.
I applied this cycle with 3.4/3.42 GPA and, 19/19/20 DAT as a Canadian citizen. I have about 500 hours of volunteering, 100 hours of shadowing. I watched americans with GPA of 3.2 and less get interviews but when it came to a more qualified (international) applicant like me...nothing. Over the last 20 course i have taken, i have managed a 3.7 ( 80% of them are intense Biochem/science course) so i hope that helps when I apply next time. I am also starting my thesis based Masters in medicinal Biochem in May.
SO I am telling you, with a 2.7 and a 3.3 nothing will happen. I thought my 3.42 ( now 3.5) was good enough but all i got was the wait list for interview. I made a huge mistake and studied for DAT for like 25 days and got that 19 too. You need to get 3.6+ each semester now till you graduate. And get a 20+ on DAT..... Take care

That sounds scary...But it's something I knew, looking at it realistically.
Do you mind me asking if you applied to any Canadian schools? They usually drop the worst year or take the best 2 years or something like that. But I guess that's why it is so competitive here.

Thanks.

No, i didn't apply to any Canadian schools. As long as i know they drop your worse year and take your best 3. And your best 3 should be above a 3.6 to be competitive. My best 3 would be around 3.6. 700 ppl compete for 31 seats ! it's ridiculous
