Hey guys, I finished my first 2 years of undergrad at Toronto and I transferred to UC Davis to complete my degree.

I have a dilemma because most american med schools require 8 semester hours of organic chemistry with lab (3 hours + lab). Now, I took a full year of o-chem in toronto and it was 3 hours + lab but the convention has been to convert this to only 6 semester hours in the american system--even though it is the same workload.

What should I do? Do i have to take another quarter of organic chem?? or is there some way to specify this on AAMC?

Please help! Thanks!

Weird. I did my undergrad at a canadian school as well but it was 3 credit for the lecture + 1 credit for the lab for each org class... can you get a statement from U of T or something? It doesn't seem like you should have to take another org chem class if you already took a year of org chem.

Doesnt make sense. If you did CHM138 + CHM247. it will be that one year.

A lot of canadian schools DO NOT give 4 credits except for engineering courses. McMaster doesn't either (although according to the guidelines published in their own calendar they should be 4 credit hours/ semester).

So from McMaster (and apparently U of T) we're apparently up the creek for some schools 😱

If you did CHM138 and CHM247 at the St. George campus, then it should equal 8 credit hours according to AMCAS... well, AMCAS verified that it was 8 credit hours for me this year. Otherwise, you can fill out a form to AMCAS to request a change in credit hours.

I have no idea what westeastmount is talking about.

credits and hours are totally different things...
He must have gotten them totally mixed up and you confused yourself with his confusion 😉

Whenever I think of CHM138, I think of my geniusness and also someone who "visited" me very late at night... Ahhh... im getting old... thinking of the good ol' times. nostlagic. 👍

u may choose to substitute visited with bothered/woke me up/disturbed/=P hahaha! 😀

I'm talking about credit hours (otherwise referred to as hours, you are right though it is confusing to use the full term), which are used by many universities as opposed to the 1 credit per full year course thing at U of T and others.

A 0.5 credit course at U of T is the same thing as a 3/4 hour course. The problem the OP is having is that his university only counted a 0.5 credit course as 3 hours, when the american standard is to count a course with labs as 4. I don't think it'll be a problem for your application thinking about i'm sure its not the first time people from U of T have applied, and since med schools will see what you had straight from U of T, they'll likely convert it correctly as 4 units.

should i convince UC Davis to change it to 4 or just leave it to AMCAS?

And yes it was chm 138 and 247 -- it doesnt make sense for me to pick up a quarter of o-chem riii???

And in the worst case scenario, I guess I can just pick up a course in o-chem b4 matriculation

No. Dont listen to the guy who was talking about hours/credithours and all that mumbo jumbo.

138 and 247 is all you need. C17H got in with that. I got in with that.

What is more impt is... arent u gonna have to do more credits to graduate then?
u should talk to your registrar. because thats not supp to be it. esp when.... uoft>davis😛

MUHAHAHA 😀

I don't know if it's the same for UofT but I went to Western and we had the same thing with the science courses that had a lab. Orgo was split into Part A (3 hrs lec + 3 hours lab per week) in first semester and part B (3 hrs lec + 3 hrs lab) in second semester and each being with 0.5 credits. I didn't have any problems with this during the cycle and I applied to quite a few schools. Some schools emailed me to clarify that my classes had lab components integrated in and that was basically it. I'd be surprised if any schools said you had to take the lab component again

All my UofT credits transferred over to Davis except a seminar course so i'm good.

And yea, I wish I couldve stayed in Toronto 🙁 Despite the cutthroatness, it was a good school....

Oh Uoft>Davis>Western hehehehe
