Hey Canadian friends,

I was looking at the FAFSA form.. and I had to put in Social Insurance Number, which of course I do not have.

If you can't get a loan or aid from the State, how are you guys paying for med school? Do we have any financial aids in Canada for students who study in the States?

And just a quick stupid questions.. let's say you got your aid from FAFSA.. sometimes people call it "award" and sometimes they call it "aid". So, for some people, they have to pay the money back and for some people they don't have to pay it back? 😕:scared:

I don't think Canadians have to fill out FAFSA. I would check it out with your ISSO or FA office.

+1, i'm 95% sure that FAFSA is federal aid..and that means it'd only be for americans only.

FAFSA is for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only, the total amount of money received through FAFSA is called award, within the award there are two types of money, grants which you don't pay back, and loans wich you will pay back after graduation.

ohh... so if you have duel citizenship - canadian and US - can you still apply for the federal aid? I have US citizenship.. but the things is I didn't bother getting the social security number because I live in Canada..

If you are a U.S. citizen then getting social security and applying to FAFSA should not be a problem, although I would start the ssn application soon I've heard it takes a while.

So.. if you wanted to receive financial aid package for the med school, could you do apply for FAFSA when you are in med school? so.. say you just pay the first year.. and then get the financial aid in second year when you get your SSN?

Thanks so much Electonegative

You could do that if you have that much money to spend on tuition .

It's really not that hard to get a SSN if you're here legally. My husband just had to go the the local Social Security office after he got his green card and he walked out with a number. Look up the documents you'll need to bring on the social security website. I'd get this taken care of before you start med school.
