Canadians requesting visas for US interviews

According to my information, Canadian visitors to the US cannot sit for interviews or seek employment. I'm in Toronto, applying for a residency in the US. Now, when I receive an invite, how do I cross to the US? What do I say as a "reason for travel"? I can't say "to sit for an interview" because that would make me ineligible... right?

Has anyone done that before?

You will simply cross as a visitor (on B-1 I believe). Nothing needs to be filed. Just say that you are visiting for 1-2 days, and they won't really care.

Now, if you are staying for an extended period of time, like for studying, you'd be admitted under an actual visa (F-1 student visa), but this won't apply to you until you accept an actual residency position on either a J-1 or H1B visa.
