Hey guys

I'd like to know as soon as possible if Canadians need some sort of visa to study in the US. I didn't think we did, but I could be very wrong as I don't know much about this subject. I'm filling out an application for the Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists at the University of Colorado. There is a section on the application that one must complete if one is not a US permanent resident or U.S. citizen.
The Questions are: 1) Do you hold a U.S. visa? If yes, which type, F-1, J-2, B-2, H-4, Other. 2) If not, what type of visa do you intend to apply for?
Okay, for one, I DO NOT have any type of U.S. visa and have no idea which type I'll need (or if I'll need one), being a Canadian myself 😕 😕
Please help. Thanks a lot in advance.

Regards..

Hi Cheer Up,

Yes I'm afraid Canadians like all other foreign students in the US do require a F-1 or J-1 visa to study in the US. The good thing about being Canadian as opposed to other nationalities is that achieving a visa ain't that tough. Once you get accepted to a school they will send you something called an I-20 . You then take this I-20 to the border (if your driving) or to the Customs people at the airport. There they will issue you a F-1 or J-1 Visa. You also need to bring other documents like a letter of finances, passport and must pay a $100 fee called the SEVIS fee. You don't need to go to a US consulate and interview with them like other nationalities have to.
Hope that helps . . .

Thank you so much, flosser, for your prompt reply. I'm learning new things everyday 😀 Phew, it's good to know that it's not hard to get the F-1 or J-1 because I was stressing out a bit there 🙂

hey thanks there flosser. its a bit hard about getting visas and also managing to get all the other things one requires to get into a school - fees/books/laptops/housing/loans etc etc.
youhave shed some light on this and that is great..

Hey flosser

Why are there 2 types of visas i.e. the F-1 and J-1 for which Canadians can apply? What is the difference between the two? Thanks.

Anyone can apply for either of the visas.F-1 is the student visa and J-1 is a visiting scholar visa. With both the bottom line is you will be expected to return to your home country at the completion of the education unless you have the work permit. To get F1 the school will send u I-20.For J-1 it is a different form.
Actually the school maybe a good place to ask, too. All of them have international student advisors whose job it is to know the immigration laws and procedures and they do explain it very well.
Hope this helps. 🙂
good luck

Hey D(M)ental

Thanks a lot for the info. I appreciate it. 🙂 I wasn't sure whether to choose F-1 or J-1 on the applications. However, now I know which one to choose. Thanks, again.

Hey Cheer up!
