Hi everyone,

So I'm in a bit of a dilemma; I've been accepted to UIC (I'm in-state) and I was pretty set on attending. However I have an interview coming up at NYMC, flight and hotel are paid for and I will also be spending a few days in Manhattan since I have never been before. However; I am not sure if I should attend the interview JIC or just cancel it and spend an extra day in the city (typing it now, sounds a bit crazy to skip an interview...sigh)

The only reason why I would consider NYMC over UIC is if I am placed at any of the campuses outside of Chicago (I haven't received my placement yet and probably won't till after the interview date at NYMC). I like living with easy access to the city and both Rockford and Peoria are way too far for me. However I've heard some 'not-so-great' things about NYMC which makes me think UIC is all-in-all a much better school.
I would like some input about which school is better overall and if there are any definitive advantages to one over the other? Thanks.

I would attend the interview for fun, but I can not imagine NYMC would have anything more to offer you that UIC-chicago doesn't. Go with your cheaper instate option. I have heard the Chicago campus is the first to get filled though so it is best to keep your options open.

Yes, it is probably best to attend JIC. I am ambivalent since it also means paying to rent a car, driving in New York traffic, and also loose a whole vacation day in NYC 😉.
I really would not call the interviewing process 'fun' haha, although it may be nice to get to see another school, but as you said is probably a good idea to attend and keep my options open. Thanks for your reply!

Patrick!!!!!! :biglove:

I didn't even know you were premed!

Did you also get accepted to Bikini Bottom School of Medicine?

They have top notch clinicals at Weenie Hut General Hospital, one of the best hospitals under the sea IMO.

OP, you had better start thinking about cost and debt. Relative to other state schools instate tuition at UIC is high. However, I can't imagine that you'd be better off financially at NYMC than you would be at any campus of the University of Illinois. You need to sit down and cost out your four years including living expenses in Westchester County vs. Chicago and see how much debt you'll be in after residency.

Congratulations on getting in at Illinois.

If you think UIC is where you'll end up, I wouldn't attend the NYMC interview. I interviewed there early this cycle before any acceptances and it was by far the longest, dullest, most uncomfortable interview I went to. I couldn't imagine undergoing that again, let alone with the thought that I could be spending time in NYC instead.

I wouldn't count on getting a Chicago placement. I interviewed at UIC in November, was accepted at the next decision date in December, and was placed in Peoria in the very beginning of January despite putting Chicago as my first choice and having all of my extracurricular experiences on my application being related to urban medicine in Chicago specifically. If you look at the UIC school-specific thread, it's the same story for a lot of other people starting in January. I've heard from my friends there that people do have pretty good luck applying into one of the "med" programs (UMed, etc) that guarantee a Chicago placement, but it's certainly not a for sure thing that you'd get in and the interviews for those programs are during second look in April so it wouldn't really be decided until like late April or May (plus I've heard that a some people get in really late as people who originally got in withdraw from UIC when they get into other schools). Soooo if you think you'd go to NYMC if you were placed in Rockford or Peoria, I would plan for that (while hoping for the best - good luck!)

The only perk of NYMC is that you could potentially live in Harlem or UWS in Manhattan and commute. NYMC was a drag when I interviewed there. UIC Chicago is located right by Cook County and the VA, which is pretty good for crazy things. It's also by a bunch of other med schools so chance for a lot of camaraderie.
