Is anyone school canceling Wed Interview in D.C. area? You think it would be alright to notify a school I would like to cancel...I don't really want to be around for the possible state of emergency...

That's a good question. Maybe use the word reschedule, rather than canceling when you call them. I think it's okay to call them. It is understandable, the weather is getting serious. I'm afraid what's going to happen if and when the hurricane comes rolling through.

I have never been in a state of emergency...Do power outages affect airports? Sorry, really clueless about this...

For me, the only time I was in state of emergency when there was tornados rolling through Texas through my town. I wouldn't think power outages would affect airports, most of them have back up generators. However, it will affect flights and cause lots of delays and such if the weather is not permittable.

I am going to be serious with this post. For an interview in the DC area that is on Wednesday no less, you are overreacting.

Actually no he's not, the area's going to be in a disarray and the adcoms will be pissed because their houses don't have power.

@OP maybe rescheduling might be a good idea, especially if you're flying on Tuesday because your plane will not fly into a tropical depression..

No, I do not believe OP is. The worst will be on Tuesday, which means we'll only start clean up on Wednesday. Power outage will likely be ubiquitous, and that's assuming people can reach the school to begin with. Airlines are already changing flight plans, I believe.

OP, I would pay attention to developments for the rest of the weekend, then call Monday morning if there are no major changes to the forecast, which isn't looking good for DC. Find out what the admissions department recommends, which will likely be rescheduling the interview. Sorry, I know this process sucks enough without nature effing things up. =(

Edit: Agree with Serenade entirely.

Don't expect any planes to be leaving or entering Reagan, BWI, or Dulles Monday evening to Wends morning.

Thanks a lot. This helped. I'll wait until Sunday evening & then call the office on Monday morning. I'm not concerned about getting there (although I am coming in on Tuesday evening, the 'peak' of Sandy), but actually leaving in a timely manner is somewhat of a concern....I'll pack my raincoat for sure...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but do you guys think a Wednesday night train to NYC will be spared from all this?

I'm flying into DC five days after Sandy is supposed to make landfall...this may be a close one.

I just read another poster that their flight to Vermont was cancelled due to the storm.

My flight back to NY has been cancelled, and the flight to DC has been severely delayed to the point where I'd basically be coming in Monday morning. All earlier flights are also taken. WELP.

Why don't you just Ride your bicycle? Ny to dc isn't that far. If I were a committee member I would be really doubting your desire to be a doctor if you can't even put in the effort to come to the interview.

Apparently, the storm won't be too harsh, but will be long. I'm hoping my two tests on Monday in DC get cancelled.

I hope you're kidding... NY to DC isn't far, but you still need safe roads/skies to get there... Depending how how bad Sandy is, not only will flights be cancelled/delayed, but trains and highways could also be shut down. How do you expect him to make the 4-5hr drive...?

I'm pretty sure he is just joking around.

Well from what I understand, NYC has issued a statement that all public transportation will be shut down at 7pm tonight. Bridges in and out of Jersey are also being shut down... So I don't think you'll be getting very far.

I'm sure that if it DOES get bad, the school will be the one canceling interviews.

It's actually hilarious, William & Mary canceled their Monday classes and probably going to cancel Tuesday and wends, despite the fact that they're not even in the way of the hurricane. -.-

It's ridiculous; Baltimore up to NYC, and then most of southern VA has cancelled classes for early next week, yet NoVA and DC aren't cancelling anything! I'm actually observing weather updates more closely than I am observing my O-chem stuff for tomorrow's exam.

I'm right there with you, I'm hoping my Ochem lab will be cancelled tomorrow so I don't have to do my ridiculous pre-lab.... Sandy can't get here soon enough!

Ask to reschedule. From what I'm seeing, planes will not be flying, Amtrak is not running, subway in NYC is closing down, commuter rail is shutting down, evacuation is being ordered for costal towns, electrical linemen are being flown in from the West Coast, power outages of a week's duration are expected. This is not merely a hurricaine but also cold airmass coming in from the west and a nor'easter coming from the north to collide over the Eastern Seaboard. The only thing that might be difficult for those of you interviewing on Wednesday is getting someone to respond to your request to rescheule because no one will be there tomorrow to answer the phone! Email will be your best bet but unless someone has plenty of battery power or a charger that works through their car, they won't be able to respond by email, either!
