My flight this morning to my interview was CANCELED!!!! They have me getting in at midnight for an 8 am interview the next day now.... 😡 I was supposed to get in late this afternoon with plenty of time to get to the hotel, get a good night sleep, etc. This is my top choice school and right now I am destined to get there sleep deprived and already frustrated. 😱

No not at all! Take a breath and relax a little bit. You can't change what time you arrive but you can change your attitude towards it. When you get to the hotel just hop in the shower, pack your portfolio, lay your clothes out, so all you have to do in the morning is throw your suit on. If you need to review still do that for about 20 mins before you have to leave to jog your memory about important stuff you want to say.

It could be worse. You could get no sleep! You will get about 5 hours of sleep which is not the end of the world. Just remember since it is your top choice you aren't going to ruin an interview because you didn't sleep for 8 hours the night before.

Good luck and chill out!! 🙂)

The year I interviewed, at one of them there were two people who had to drive overnight in a blizzard and arrived at 7 AM in time for an 8 AM interview. So, your situation could be much, much worse.

Btw, both of these people got admitted into the program.

You'll want to give the program a heads up, since it may take the edge off because you won't worry as much about them judging you if you are a bit scattered.

When I was applying for internship I had to drive through a blizzard to get to a site, and it definitely stressed me out. I had been living at the beach for 5+ years, so driving in the snow was an adventure. The site was very understanding and they appreciated our willingness to make the best of a less than ideal situation. Both myself and one of the other applicants matched to the site.

That can be really frustrating - but don't worry too much about it when it comes to your interview the next day. When I was interviewing, one time my flight was delayed on my first connection (I had 2 connections) and I didn't make my third flight. There would be no flights until the next day, so from my second connection location (which I arrived to around midnight) I drove down 9-10 hours. Arrived to the school around 10am, for an interview day that started at 9am (I got in around 930am, washed my face put on my suit - and with no sleep, straight to the school). I had notified them ahead of time of course.

Plus side? 1) Made for a good story to break the ice at times, 2) I tend to be super energized when I get no sleep (like some weird sugar high - until I crash later lol), and 3) they accepted me straight off the bat and that's the program I ended up going to. Later when I talked to the grad students, they mentioned that they had respected my motivation to get there no matter what and the fact that I didn't let it get to me.

So tonight, as someone else said, just get to your hotel - relax - and just remember that you're going to be okay. 🙂

Thanks everyone. Hopefully it will go well.

Gosh, all these stories are terrible (that it happened to you), but amazing at the same time because it shows your relentless dedication.

I was in a similar situation last night, where my 5 PM flight was delayed twice, and then eventually cancelled due to the snow. They wouldn't put me on any of the flights until 12 PM the day of my interview (which is absolutely ridiculous), so I stuck it out and drove 3.5 hours last night (in a car full of strangers) to get to my interview destination - I'll be darned if I flew across country just to not make it for the last connecting flight!

It's definitely a frazzling and stressful experience, but I'm going into it just thinking that it makes me more committed and dedicated to this school, and I think the people there will appreciate your headstrong attitude. Best of luck to everyone!

You'd be surprised how much nerves keep you awake during interviews! It's worked for me... 4 times!

I can completely empathize, the same thing recently happened to me at my top choice school. My flight was canceled and the only way I could get to the city was to fly into another city 3.5 hours away and drive in. I didn't get to my destination until 3:30am and I had to get up at 7:00am. It actually wasn't too bad as I was so excited about the interview that I didn't even feel tired until about 2:00pm on interview day, after most of the day's events were over. Also, it makes a pretty good story and just verifies the fact that you're so interested in the program you're willing to go to these lengths to get to the interview. After all was said and done, I was made an offer and I accepted 🙂

Happened to me too... ended up with a phone interview and a place on the waitlist... totally sucked and I didn't get in... I was NOT a happy camper. I couldn't drive or get an alternate flight.

I had an interview in Texas and was flying through Seattle during their January ice storms (with a checked bag full of my interview clothes). No flights were going in or out of Sea-Tac so the flight was diverted to Portland until a runway in SEA cleared (this never happened). Because the original destination was Seattle the airline wouldn't unload the baggage, and after waiting 10 hours for the weather to pass I was forced to book a direct flight to Texas from Portland and leave my bag there. I interviewed in the same pants an shoes I wore on the plane, and a white shirt which was provided by my POI (it was a bit baggy). Never have I felt more uncomfortable at a job interview.

Thank you all for you support, empathy, and stories. It is amazing what we all go through for the programs we want....

I got in just after midnight, ironed clothes, and went to bed by 1:30. It all went ok. I was definitely tired, but I felt the interviews went well. I should actually hear from them tomorrow. It was a really competitive interview group..... Definitely an awesome program though. *hoping for a spot*

I am happy to say that it was worth the trouble. I GOT IN!!!
