Hello everyone,

I posted a similar thread in the Pre-Osteopathic forum, but I haven't gotten nearly as much information as I would've liked. I've recently been accepted to KCUMB for the Class of '09, and at this point, I am deciding on whether or not it would be worth it for me to go to my Des Moines Univ. interview.

A couple of the reasons preventing me from otherwise going is that I've already been in that area twice now (never did realize how close kansas city, kirksville, and des moines could be to each other until afterwards), and also that I have a midterm around the same general time frame. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I have an exam practically every week in february, and several other interviews in the same time frame that are already restraining my ability to get all my work done.

Anyhow, if I do make the decision to cancel the interview, I want to give the school enough time to be able to fill my slot with another applicant. To do this though, I'd like to be able to make an informed decision, and I'd really appreciate it if someone on this forum could give me insight onto what the school looks like (is it attractive?), the curriculum (traditional vs. systems-based), and where the clerkships are held.

The most important concern that I have is where the rotation sites will be. One thing that appealed to me about KCUMB is that the 3rd year can be done in AZ or NV, but the 4th year has complete flexibility and so long as it is arranged by the student, the student can do his/her clerkships at absolutely any hospital in the country. This is ideal, because I would still be able to stay in the west for the 3rd year, and then move back to CA for the 4th. I am wondering what type of flexibility DMU has, and generally, where the core clerkships are required to be done.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. I really appreciate it!

Des Moines is a nice campus - there is more to do in Des Moines than you might imagine. The school is very expensive, in my opinion. It is good at OMM. Rotations can be done anywhere (you will almost certainly have to relocate), and you are very likely to end up in our core hospitals in Ohio - make an effort to learn about them (Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, Warren, Cleveland). We take a lot of DMU'ers. Compared with Iowa, Ohio is a different place culturally (particularly Cleveland), and it will take some adjustment.

Good luck!

I think both are good schools in good cities. As far as expense, I believe DMU is about $5000 cheaper than KCUMB tuition-wise. Des Moines also has a lower cost of living than KC. KCUMB has a great systems approach to teaching and flexibility in 3rd and 4th year selections. I'm sure there are dozens of other tradeoffs in criteria, many of which are subjective for each applicant. For example, not sure how the grading systems or national boards scores compare.
