Is 10 days notice o.k.?? I don't want to be rude or disrespectful. Also, if you get the reputation as a last minute canceler, I'm sure word could spread pretty fast....

Any input is appreciated.

It's best to cancel as soon as you can if you're not interested. I think programs would rather you cancel than interview when you have no interest... It's a waste of their time, and sometimes they can find last minute interviewees. I don't think programs communicate to the extent where you'd actually gain a reputation. Once in a while a program will call another about a candidate they're really interested in, but that's about it... (I think)

Concur with above, cancel as soon as you know that you are not going on that interview. It will help that program and also possibly give someone else waiting for an interview a chance. I sent the program an email just saying thank you for the invite but I won't be able to make the interview. I got emails back from the programs quickly thanking me for contacting them before the actual interview

Do you guys also withdraw officially through ERAS? I ended up canceling an interview I had a month and a half from now b/c i knew I wasn't going to go there. Sent them the e-mail but I didn't really get a response back. I'm just assuming its done.

I didn't withdraw my cancelled interviews from ERAS. The only thing that matters in the end is your rank list.

To the OP - I think 10 days is fine, but agree that the more notice, the better.

for programs that sent you an invitation to interview but do not plan on scheduling an interview, is it still necessary to e-mail them back stating that you don't plan on scheduling an interview date (obviosuly this would be phrased differently on the actual e-mail)?

Once you cancel, do most programs email you acknowledging the fact that you cancelled? How do you know that they didn't miss your email and you're still scheduled for that day? Thanks!!

I said in the email that I would wait for confirmation and then withdraw via ERAS. I received confirmation within 20 minutes and there were no difficulties. Good luck, everyone!

While I don't think most programs are in the position to have to wait around, I'm still emailing programs that I will not be able to interview with them.
