I scheduled an interview at a program but now I decided for personal reasons that I don't want to work there. What would be a nice way to cancel the interview? or does it even matter?

Definitely cancel it. They can give your spot to someone else!

I recall reading on SDN most people did this via email. A simple note thanking them for the opportunity and letting them know your schedule has changed/you are unable to attend the interview is enough. Apparently no reason or long explanation is necessary.
