So lets say someone has about 10 interviews before oct. 15, but wants to cancel 1 or 2 to save some money, even before he/she has any acceptances? Is he/she crazy?

Interested to hear your thoughts.

you can only do as much as your bank account allows i suppose but yea I'd say you're crazy. Only because for all you know you SUCK at interviews and even though you have 10 interviews you need every shot you can get.

If you really don't have the money, then you have no choice but to cancel a few. On the other hand, if you just want to "save some money" so you can get the latest video game or some new clothes, well, you're crazy. Think of how much money you're going to spend on your education; travel expenses are chump change.

Don't cancel -- ask to reschedule to a later date stating money/travel costs OR an examination that day that you can't get out of or family plans or anything really.. maybe don't even give a reason.

If you can't reschedule, take out a small private loan. Better to go to all the interviews, get accepted to several places than to miss out on the 1 or 2 that would have accepted you potentially and get in no where. Better not take any chances.

I actually have 10 interviews before the 15th (and a few after). I was thinking about canceling some (since I applied early and heard back early I wasn't given the option of scheduling them later), but then realized that if in the case I didn't get in, I'd be regretful ever since. Sure if you view interviews as independent and random processes the odds of getting in after say 9 interviews should be 99.9%, but in reality you get better over time with interviews. Also when I applied last year I know that interviewing kinda got in my way (I didn't get feedback, but I know my interviewing sucked), so I figured that I need more interviews than the average successful applicant.

Traveling to all these places in such a short amount of time could be tiring and expensive, but I definitely would be happy at any of the medical schools at which I have interviewed at.

Yeah, reschedule some at a later date and maybe by the time some of the later interviews roll around you will have an acceptance in hand from an earlier interview. Then you can cancel a few interviews without risk.

I have also thought about your calculation, which I think is about right, since you have a 1/5-1/2 shot of getting accepted after interview....but I wouldnt necessarily view the interviews as independent events, because if you suck at one interview then you will most likely suck at several other interviews. However, even without the assumption that you will get better at interviewing as you go to more the chances of getting in somewhere are still very high with 10 interviews....at least I hope.

I have gone to 3 interviews so far and have 3 more to go. I rescheduled those 3 for after Oct. 15th so I can save money if I get accepted before, but not risk getting in nowhere.

that's an interesting play to try and do even 8-9 interviews BEFORE october 15. Sure, you have the benefits of a really early app, but one could also argue that so many interviews in a short period of time can burn you out and make you not perform as well at your top choices from mental fatigue/exhaustion. Did you consider just doing like your top 5 choices before Oct 15, and then rescheduling the rest for nov/dec? That way you can withdraw from all of them, if you get into even just one of your top 5 most desirable.

I agree that it is risky to cancel some interviews before having an offer in hand.

On the other hand: some applicants come off as arrogant because they figure their chances of getting into medical school are 99.9% and interviewers find that to be a major turnoff. Furthermore, some applicants become overly rehearsed and come across as less sincere as they answer the same questions so many times in a short period.

This comes up every year.. I wouldn't until you have an acceptance in hand. An interview does not guarantee an acceptance no matter how many schools I think there were a couple of horror stories last cycle of people with 7-10 interviews and no acceptances only WLs..

Yea your borderline crazy, I would advise you to see a shrink before the med school interview canceling starts affecting the other part of your life. lol.

if you can't get into 1 school out of even 3-4 you interviewed at, there is probably a major problem in your interviewing skills
