I was planning on retaking the DAT in July and reapplying, but I recently got accepted. I went on the ADA website and there is a $25 cancellation fee and "Testing fees are non-refundable and non-transferable (no exceptions)." So I lose my $400 and have to pay an additional $25? Am I reading that right? Do I have to cancel? Anyone been in this position before?

Congrats on your acceptance! I think if you don't show up, it would just list you as a no show. No score will be reported and nothing will be sent to the schools. You will most likely lose your money. I would call ADA and check up on this though.

Or... You can just take it for ol' good times sake. Lol.

congrats, that's not a bad problem to be in. From what it sounds like.. if you pay a 25 dollar cancellation fee, they won't return your testing fees, but it sounds like they'll return your fees to send your scores to schools over your first 5 that are included in the original price. So you said you paid 400 dollars, you'll probably be out the 210 or so it cost to take the exam + the cancellation fee, but not the additional money you sent to have your additional scores sent out. At least that's how it sounds to me.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll have to call ADA on Monday to be sure

and thanks 🙂 I'm definitely not complaining about my position.. I would rather be out $400 and in dental school then having to reapply! something just doesn't seem right about paying a cancellation fee! I'll keep everyone posted on what I find out if anyone else is ever in this position!!

I had the same problem and it didn't make sense to me to pay an AADITIONAL $25 to cancel the exam. I thought I just wouldn't show up to the exam and save myself $25. However, I called ADA and they weren't really clear on what would happen if I just didn't show up to the exam and said I have to pay the cancellation fee. So in order to be on the safe side, I just went ahead and paid it to cancel my exam 😡. IT DIDN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME AT ALL.

I would just pay it. I think I postponed my DAT twice and had to pay up for it both times, so at least you didn't do that.
