I was looking at the courses at my school and it seems that in order to take biochemistry you need to have taken 2 300-level chemistry courses AND be a chemistry major.

Is this typical? I've had multiple people suggest taking biochemistry but I'm not a chemistry major. It seems like a lot of people take it though so is this just my school or something? Any suggestions?

Other than that, the other classes I plan on taking that aren't pre-med requirements are microbiology, microanatomy & techniques, and Biology of the Eukaryotic Cell because it's a prereq for the microanatomy class.

Thanks

Try looking in the bio department instead of the chem department. At my school there is biochemistry for chem majors, and another course for everyone else. If not, contact the professor and see if you can get an override into the course

Go talk to the head of the chem department. I agree with the person above, if your going to a big university you'll have a biochem for biology or molecular biology majors.

Biochem is scheduled at the same time as other "major" classes (i.e. cheme's all have their cheme classes at this time), so I can't take BCH, neither can pretty much anyone besides BCH majors, either.

It's a pretty small school and there was no biochemistry under the biology classes. I could maybe talk to the head of the chem department but if it requires 2 other advanced chem classes that seems like it might be beyond me since I would only have gen chem 1&2 and orgo 1&2

have you thought about taking it at a nearby CC or at another university? I have friends who did both when they couldn't get the classes they needed...

Won't orgo 1&2 count as your two 300 level chem classes? At my school, you need to have taken chem 1&2, ochem1&2 + lab, and a couple biology classes to take biochem.

Also, biochem at my school is within the chemistry department, but you don't have to be a chemistry major to take it. Just talk to the department chair and get special permission for the class. ochem 1&2 is enough prep for biochem.

CC's have Biochemistry classes?

News to me.

Same here for the biochem pre-reqs, except you don't need the extra biology classes. And yep, Ochem should definitely be enough.

OP, that's a really weird situation with your school. I can see maybe cell bio being helpful, but that's a biology class. Gen chem and Ochem are all you need. I can't think of any other chemistry class that would be needed for biochem.

It says "Chem 332 (orgo 2), and chem 371 (quantum chemistry) or 372 (chemical thermodynamics) are prerequisites; and reserved for Chemistry Majors"

I guess I could talk to some head of the department and see about special permission but they'd probably still make me take the 371 or 372 class...which would be pointless other than to be able to take biochemistry.

But you guys I guess don't think those classes past orgo are necessary to take biochem?
