hey,
i have to take a tests and measurements class for one program i am applying to. it will cost about $1000 to take it at a school near me, I've found it online at a place called Canyon College for $500. Has anyone heard of the place? Here's a link: http://www.canyoncollege.edu/m~psychology.htm

It is NOT legitimately accredited, not even close. The courses here are worth less than those at DeVry or ITT Tech.

Obviously it is "highly regarded":

From http://chronicle.com/free/v51/i14/14a02901.htm

"Although ".edu" Internet addresses are supposed to be reserved for colleges with accreditation from agencies approved by the U.S. Department of Education, hundreds of institutions that do not meet that requirement have the coveted Web addresses.

Canyon is one of them. The only agencies that have granted it accreditation are organizations with no standing with the Department of Education. And the Oregon Student Assistance Commission Office of Degree Authorization, which has been aggressive in warning students about unaccredited institutions, has a Web site that says Canyon College "appears to be a diploma mill" -- the term used for institutions of questionable quality that exchange degrees for money and little work."

PS - Look at the site, it looks like it was created by a 3rd grader, on the other hand they share some faculty with Capella. 😉 I guess that gives them some street cred....

yeah that article is the one i saw. it looked extremely un-legit, but i was hoping against hope i'd found a cheaper option...

What about a local state university, college, or even community college? Any of those are more likely to get accepted.

Mark

yeah it is offered at one state college and it is $800. it is frustrating because community college classes are only $88!!

Well taking it at a worthless institution would be a bigger waste of money than the $300 delta at a local state school.

Before you invest the money to take a course anywhere, make sure you call the program you are applying to and ask if the course requirement is a hard and fast rule. They may consider your application without it and simply have you take the class at the undergraduate level in their department if you are admitted. It's definitely worth a shot if you haven't done so already.

that was the first thing i did, but they are sticklers!

While Canyon is indeed a crock, was this really necessary?

They do not share faculty with Capella, sadly they have hoodwinked some STUDENTS into "teaching" for them.

And before you get all high and mighty about the obvious lack of intellegence of Capella students who are on the "faculty" of Canyon, others graduated from:

Central Michigan University
University of Southern Mississippi
Southern Illinois University
University of Maryland
Texas A&M University
The College of William and Mary
Iowa State University
University of Massachusetts
Suffolk University School of Law
Southern California University
Texas Tech University
St. John's University
University of San Francisco

... and that's just the first page of "faculty" A - F

Ooops, found ONE shared faculty member ... had to get to "Y".

Let's resist the smearing with a overly broad brush, hmm?

Wowza. I just checked the faculty page and it was kind of scary. Most of their FACULTY don't seem like they could get accepted to a program. I think I saw 1 or 2 with okay CVs but I've seen undergrads with better CVs than the majority!

I think the most impressive pub I saw was "Hawaii Psychologist" or something like that. Its hard to tell because many of them don't even cite the journals properly, which makes me wonder if they didn't just fabricate publications.

100% scam.

No, probably not. I'll try to tame it down a bit.

The faculty member I really enjoyed most had 60+ publications... almost all for the journal he edited (and possibly founded as well.)

Mark

Huh, I missed that one. He's got about 55-60 publications more than everyone else though😉

I've found a new favorite though.

"Highlights of qualifications
- Proficient in word processing".

Good god! There were other things listed as well, but that's akin to putting "Adding double digit numbers" A "computer skills" section is fine, but "proficient in word processing" wouldn't have made my highlights in middle school...

Okay, I'm done ripping on their faculty now😉

I examined Canyon long ago when I was looking for legitimate programs hoping to land some teaching gigs.

What caught my eye (and raised my suspicions) -- besides the tendency for faculty to list every possible letter after their names (and in reverse -- highest to lowest ranking -- order) -- was several had "earned" PhD(c).

Examining the CVs revealed that this indeed meant "PhD candidate".

OK, I know different universities have different policies for how one can identify themselves when they have entered doctoral candidacy. However, I don't know of ANY that encourage students to add a "degree" designation to their name.

More troubling, I posted my observations to a discussion board and was hounded for making a mountain out of a molehill. As if Canyon being a diploma mill wasn't bad enough, "faculty" attempting to confuse prospective students by putting misleading "degrees" in their signature line just wasn't seen by this group as being all that important.

So much for the "prestige" of earning a doctorate.
