Does anyone know if it is possible to complete a CAPIC internship and then become licensed outside of California?
Anyone have experience with this and can share? Thanks!

I know several students who completed CAPIC internships and were successfully licensed in Massachusetts, Maine, North Carolina, Vermont, Iowa, Washington, Oregon (and possibly other places but I'm just not aware of that.) The important thing is to be certain that the length of the internship is sufficient (Massachussetts for example has a minimum number of weeks (43?) that is longer than some school/college placements might be) AND that the internship meets or exceeds all of the APPIC standards for membership--especially regarding the number of hours supervised by licensed psychologists or other details required by that state. CAPIC has aligned their requirements with APPIC to make this simpler. You need to have the TD certify "equivalence" at your time of licensure. Basically, you need to do your homework in advance and then be prepared to do some added documentation along the way.

Hi all- I go to a psyD program at a professional school in California, and I'm thinking of doing a CAPIC internship next year. I know that I will not want to do a career that will require an APA internship, but I'm worried that when I move out of state, doing an CAPIC internship may lead to some difficulties. I will likely move to Washington DC or Maryland - does anyone know if I can do a CAPIC internship and still get licensed in those states? I'm having a hard time figuring it out from the websites... And is there any other reason (besides the lack of money) not to do a CAPIC internship?

Thanks.

This isn't a clear answer, but here is what MD says about approved internship training experiences:

H. The internship program shall be:

(1) Accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA);

(2) A member program of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral Internship Centers (APPIC); or

(3) Part of an academic program that:

(a) Is approved or designated by the:

(i) APA;

(ii) CPA; or

(iii) Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB)/National Register; and

(b) Includes an internship that is approved by the program's academic training director as meeting its criteria for an internship.
