Cardiologists are trained to perform such procedures and it is becoming more common. At our center we have a peripherally trained interventionalist who performs carotid stents, renal artery stents as well as femoral/iliac stents. Others in the group are learning these procedures as the interventional volume for coronaries has taken a dip (? transient) after the release of the COURAGE trial.
As with any procedure, one gets better at performing peripheral interventions with higher volume. If an interventional cardiologist has a high volume of peripheral procedures, there is no question they will be as technically skilled to perform those procedures as interventional radiologists.
