I know people who got Northwestern, but I don't know any thing about Duke.
Do you know any body got call from Duke

Yep, some Duke offers went out last Friday.

I'm an IMG and i'm going to start my residency on H1 visa in IM this july at a univ. affiliated community hospital in illinois. I'm interested in card fellowship. So what will be the best approach for me at this time ? what i have heard from people is that it is almost impossible to get card fellowship on an H1 visa? what can be done to improve chances of getting card fellowship on H1 visa?

I have a few questions for you all. I was wondering if there was time allotted in your residency program (Internal Medicine)for research projects.

We had no dedicated research months per se, but we did have dedicated "elective" months that could be used for research. We had none in intern year, one in 2nd year, one in 3rd year I believe.
We also got a choice of what wards and consult months we wanted during 2nd and 3rd years.
This was at a major so-called "top 20" internal medicine residency at a major academic medical center.
Many programs have a lot more elective and/or research time. It's actually one of the questions I should have known to ask when interviewing for residency that I did not. It's important b/c with 1 month/year of research time many attendings won't want to bother to work with you on a research project. Also, if interviewing I'd ask the house staff, not the program director, how many research months the house staff gets - the PD will tell you everyone does research and there is adequate time, no matter what the true sitation is.

Let me indicate that you should avoid LSU. The program is going south and the whole hospital is in trougle with ACGME.

I can only speak of Ochsner. For the past couple of years, they invite people down - pay for their flight and stay - who are interested in cardiology for a little "conference." Its actually a Ochsner show and tell.

The program is very interventional heavy. And when they say cardiovascular...they mean it. They'll do a PCI on anything if they can reach it with a cath....80% Vertebral artery with 100% occluded carotids.

They do have Chris White who is a big name in cardiology. Their program director....I can;t remember his name (from South America)...is a heart failure specialists and is very passionate about the program and his fellows. He trained with someone big, but again I can't remember their name either.

A lot of the area hospitals closed their cath labs down due to Katrina and some never re-opened so they get a lot of procedures.

As for the training, the fellows seemed very happy. Not much BS research going on there.

The bad thing about the program is the area...from my understanding, its shady.

I would say it would be worth your time to check it out.

It has the reputation of being the best fellowship program in the area and of being very heavy on the interventional cards focus.

I have heard it's quite busy and very private-practice oriented, so might not be the best place to go if you want an academic career, but if you want to do interventional cards could be ideal. I heard it's a bit of a macho boys' club as well, but not sure if that's true vs. not.

I agree that Oschner is good. Lots of very successful docs have come from there. Tulane is also well respected. Stay away from LSU.

Dear All My friends,

I am new to this forum . I am an IMG and got a prematch offer from community based program in NYC. This program does not have in house fellow but they do send out elective to any hospital we want to go as the PC also contacts these hospitals to get our elective.I got 255/262 for step 1 and 2 and I am also interested to be a cardiologist. So,BTW these time, what should I do and can anyone who is in the stream of applying to Card: fellow guide me for this? Thanks ahead!

What do you need to get into cardiology? I am not interested in cardio but I heard it is difficult to get in. I am a 2nd year med student in a carribean med school, I know nothing about fellowship. Can some one just explain what kind of scores they are looking for and research? I am just curious?

If you're not interested in Cards, why do you care what it takes to get into Cards?
