MS4 soon to be graduate planning to go into IM, wondering what the requirements as an IM resident are to match successfully into cardiology and exactly how competitive is it?

Be a good internist first (very important)
Get a strong letters from your PD and cardiology attending
Have few publications and few abstracts in national meeting
Spend some time in ccu, cardiology consult service , cath lab when you are second and third year resident
Try to build some connections

Agree with above. Also, try to build critical care skill set such as doing lines (central lines, arterial lines, dialysis catheters... etc) and think critically but also systematically in emergent situations. Those are important as first year felllws
