I am new to SDN. I am recently graduated with a bachlor's in Spanish and am now considering optometry. I have returned to school as a post-bacc and am talking pre-reqs.
I have shadowed several optometrists and opthalmologists. I really like the personal interactions between OD's and their patients. I also like the hours and lifestyle. When I was shadowing,I really enjoyed contact lens fitting and am fascinated by pathology. In addition, obsvering cataract sx was absolutley incredible!!! However watching refractions was very boring. I am concerned that optometry may not be the best career choice for me? Has anyone else had this experience? Is refracting more interesting when you are doing it as opposed to watching??? If anyone has any insight, I would appreciate it.

Yeah, I'd have to agree...refraction is the most routine part of the exam.

I think refracting is partially what you make it. I've seen ODs ask 1 or 2 the entire time which can be really boring but the doc i observe with now makes conversation and interacts alot during refraction.
