Hello out there....

What other avenues are there for an optometrist that doesn't want to be in clinic everyday? Possibly making the same amount of money...

I absolutely hate optometry. I feel like a fool for even doing this degree. Complete waste of time and money. I wish I had better guidance when picking a career.

I hate it because 1-you're right the return on investment sucks. 2- I don't think I like dealing with the general public anymore because they are know it alls and they are always late. 3- the Saturday hours 4- the fact that when you work in retail you have these uneducated district managers and general managers telling you what to do.

I have also worked in private practice and I didn't like that either. That's why I'd like to have less patient interaction.

I feel like I should have just gone to med school because at least I would have felt appreciated and like I'm making difference.

It also depends where you practice and how.

I don't think you'll last in any other healthcare field with that attitude.

I literally ended up here after a google search.

I was more of a people person before I became an optometrist...it's just been downhill from then on.

Going to medical school will not fix the feeling of being unappreciated. Non-physician managers are common. Physicians are also under pressure to do more with less, are required to work many hours including nights, weekends and holidays and are subject to unpleasant administrative rules and regulations. We will probably see more of this in the future especially with the advent of accountable care organizations.

Optometrists do make a difference on an individual patient level. Maybe we just need to take a hard look at each encounter from the patient's point of view.

Go find yourself a really good lease and then hire new grads to work for you. You'll have to put in a few years of work yourself to build the lease but eventually you can sit at home and manage your stores.
