Just curious anyone here work in the IT field or if not have gotten a degree from college after 4 yrs and decided the industry is not right? Well this happened to me I am a recent colege grad though and hate the IT industry. I am wanting to change directions into the medical field which is pharmacy?

So was wondering if anyone expereinced that after college or during their careers?


Also, what backups are htere if one doesnt get into pharmacy school?>

I am applying for 2006 and working on ym courses...the competition for pharmacy is stiff even though there is a shortage of the profession..I dont understand that

Shortage of pharmacists from shortage of schools from shortage of education funding from shortage of government intelligence from shortage of motivated individuals from a shortage of love and care from parents from a shortage patience when raising a bratty child.

The morale? Kids, be good.

Seriously though, there's a shortage of pharmacists, but they aren't going to just let anyone in.... we're talking messin' with peoples' meds here. =)

There really isisnt a shortage of pharmacists. The shortage is hyped so they can pay us lower wages in the near future.

Hi wannabepharm. I'm one of those IT people who graduated with a CS degree, worked for a major cellular sw company, hated the office politics, missed working with people and went back to school for pre-pharm. I'm glad to say that I was accepted to a pharmD program this year, but I will readily admit that it is harder to make your application shine without a Bio/Micro/Chem degree. The trick is to do really well in your pre-pharm and volunteer lots n lots.

Just curious..what school did you apply and what gpa did you have? My gpa sucks it is 2.71 and I wanan do this as a career but I dont feel deep inside I will get accepted..so I dont know what to do...how id you make the transition from IT to Pharmacy?
Did you deicde this late into your career?

I also have a ICS bachelor degree from UCI. Been working in the IT industry over 5 yrs and have decided to pursue pharmacy. I know there are at least 7-9 others in my class who are changing toward pharmacy or dentistry, so you are definitely not alone.

I will be attending pharmacy school this fall, just haven't decide on which yet🙂 Work hard and you will get there. Good luck!

Thanks for your help...Its jut my gpa is low its 2.71 & i am gonna begin pre req classes... hopefully...I wanan get intot he medical field really..I hate the IT field...how did you overcome the change from it to pharmacy.....

My motivation for changing occurred after working with serveral startups and finally at my current company. For me personally, I hated the instability of IT and the lack of appreciation along with the high stress. I'd rather do something more worthwhile, such as helping people as a pharmacist. These are my motivations for changing toward pharmacy.

My GPA is 3.6/3.7. I've received acceptances to Albany, USN, and Purdue for this fall. A computer science degree complements well with all type of professions, so point this out in your future interviews. Don't worry over prior GPAs and just focus on where you need to get from this point on. Try to work hard on your prereq's and retake classes that you did not do well. If you raise your GPA and volunteer, I am sure you will be able to to do it.

i also want to change my career to pharmacy. i have a degree in computer science and have worked in software company for 2 years. The main reason i want to leave IT industry is the same reason as you mentioned, the lack of appreciation in spite of hard and stressful working environment. Plus, i don't see myself working in IT industry when i become 40 or more, so i have made up my mind, quited the current job and started preparing for pharmacy school. i now work in Walgreens to get some experience and the retail is not that bad if and only if you can handle FEW angry and uneducated customers with whom you can't avoid interacting from time to time. i have no problem dealing such people so i guess i am ok~.

anyways, out of curiosity, even though u went to school in ca, why didn't u apply for any ca schools? Or did you not get accepted? if you didn't get accepted by any ca schools with your GPA, i am quitely disappointed and believe that i have to start preparing for PCAT.

How did u complete the pre-req courses? did you go to CC? have u run into any disadvantages by taking pre-req courses in cc during your application process? since i have to take few more classes to get my pre-req courses done, i am planing going to cc.

Why did you quit IT? Best to find out about job conditions in pharmacy before you go through the whole process again. Some people get stuck in retail (where most jobs are) and are very dissatisfied. It may be hard to find the good pharmacy jobs out there such as pharm companies, research, teaching etc. but not impossible. I agree that IT as a field is not a good choice; there is no long term future in IT, you are just a disposable commodity to a corporation, then discarded for younger cheaper workers after a certain age. Pharmacy has let its profession get taken over by nonpharmacists. You dont have that problem in medicine. Also doctors get more respect with age unlike the IT worker.
