I started my third year a couple of months ago and I am already questioning my career choice. I am not sure I want to practice medicine but would still like to work in the health feild. Do you know what are my career options if I have an MD but did not go through a residency? Do you know of anybody who took that route? Thanks

If you haven't already, check out the MD/MBA forum. There is a discussion on the exact same topic. In short, doing an intern year and passing step III would open up more doors to healthcare related jobs.

transcriptionist, but you'd be overqualified

get another degree (MPH?)

hospital administration, but i'm thinking you'd need the degree for that

i got this idea from scrubs cuz nervous guy couldn't cut it (no reflection on your abilities) and he transitioned easily into the morgue guy that does autopsies...not the most appealing, but i guess it works for some

forensics?

I think he's actually a pathologist.

drug commercials! you just have to think of a good name for yourself. i give you permission to use mine if you wish.

I am just imagining that insurance companies must need physicians to do claim reviews. Although I think this might be mostly nurses, but maybe worth considering if you really are against doing any residency.

I forget the exact name of the book, but there is reference out there called sometime like "Beyond the Bedside", which outlines a lot of careers like this (including public health, medical journalist, health policy, etc).

Do at least your intern year. Then you can get a license and have more options.

I feel your pain. I hope you find something you enjoy.

I work in a library at Pfizer. We hire PhDs and MDs to do medical informatics work (literature researching and searching).
