Hey Guys,

Does anyone know of the career options for an IMG MD who is fully ECFMG certified- I am waiting for the 2004 match, have a work permit with no visa issues.

I was wondering if ER takes 'casual residents' to fill in extra shifts, or even some weekly or monthly contract work on the floors- I am IM person with almost 2 yrs of proper training overseas.

Any of your comments are welcome..

If you have a permanent license (in the state you wish to practice) then you may be able to find some work but if you don't have a license yet then you'll need a temporary license and you'll only get one of these by being in a residency program. There are no casual residents who come in to fill a few shifts. There really aren't many viable options for physicians without a license unless you're good at business or research.

I thought I could apply for NY state licence with step III , but how long it will take for the processing I dont know...

Jim, are you sure one needs to be in a Residency Program for this.

I really find it hard to believe, because when we moved to US, the talk was there is a big shortage for MD s on the ease coast, here I am all barier exams cleared, and still no jobs 😕

If you went to a US med school, then you can get a licence once u complete the step 3. If you are an FMG, you need to complete a US residency. If not for this foreign docs would come over by the 1000's for jobs, and incomes and jobs would drop to nil. There is a shortage of docs in the US, and thats how most of us like it. If you get a residency then you will appreciate the system too. 🙂

here's a link with license requirements for NYS medical license. If you are not a US med school grad, it looks like you have to have completed a residency in the US in order to get licensed.

good luck.

Yes, even for a U.S. grad most states require AT LEAST one year of residency in order to get your permanent license. In Michigan they require two years and I see to get a license in NY you need to have completed at least 3 years of residency as an IMG and 1 year as an AMG.

Here's the pertinent section from that link:

"Graduates of LCME-accredited medicine programs must have completed 1 year of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved postgraduate training.
Graduates of non-LCME-accredited medicine programs must have completed 3 years of ACGME-approved postgraduate training."

Every state has different requirements however so check out the requirements for every state you'd like to practice in...there may actually be one out there that requires no residency experience and only Step III although I highly doubt it.

I personally am glad for these requirements as a newly minted U.S. MD or an experienced IMG, you just are not ready to deal with the U.S. medical system yet. Wait until you try to practice and see how much paper work you'll have to fill out. You'll need a Medicare I.D. number from the federal government in order to bill for Medicare patients. We are a very regulated profession.
