Hey there,

I'm new to this forum (or these forums), so sorry for getting this thread into the wrong place (if it did!)

I'm also new to the field of medicine. I've always been wanting a career in mathematics and many stuff indicate that it's the right thing for me (I'm a high achiever in maths and physics), but after careful reflection I've chosen medicine [I hated A level biology lessons - so much to memorise- compared to the breeze of maths but meh].

I've got no immediate family members experienced in medicine. [ it's only my second cousin once removed who is a GP].

So I was wondering how you could start off from high school (or college in UK terms) and end up as an authority in a field, say a neuro sergeant? Something like undergrad + MD + whatever one usually does after MD + some study after that?

What if I study in a country following the UK tradition (straight into 5 year medicine MBBS/MBchB course after highschool?)

Thank you.

Sorry, does neurosurgeon = neuro sergeant or is a neuro sergeant something else? You should forget about becoming a specialist this early in the game. You should first be worried about college and then later medical school. Don't become dead set on being a neurosurgeon, or any specialist. You are a physician first before a surgeon. It is somewhat competitive in the US to become a neurosurgeon, it will take much more than being above level in high school classes.

What country do you currently live in? That will predict the pathway you take.

Lastly, if you thought it was difficult to memorize stuff in high school you might really think about a field other than medicine. Medical school is all about cramming as much information down your throat as possible. The more cerebral, thought processing part doesn't come until later once you have a decent grip of the fundamentals.

It sounds like you need to shadow some medical professions, maybe spend some time volunteering in a hospital. I would also advise you to do a search of the forums and google in general. That will answer most of the questions you have on this subject. The life of a physician is very different from what it is chalked up to be in the media.
