Need some input. Want to pursue a surgical specialty but unsure which one yet. Cost of attendance/distance from family is the same for both.

Carle Illinois
Pros

• Insane match list
• Great school/campus culture
• Tons of research/innovation opportunities with UIUC (research powerhouse)

Cons

• Location/Weather
• Not many home residency programs

EnMed
Pros

• Location in Texas Medical Center so more opportunities for research, networking, conferences, etc.
• Additional MEng Degree
• More home residency programs at Houston Methodist
• Weather

Cons

• Overall weaker match list than Carle (but still pretty good)
• Starts earlier

I think it depends how much you value the MEng degree, do you see this as being important to what you want to do in the future? If yes, then that may be the way to go. If not, Carle having the better match list would make it the clear winner.

I don't know EnMed's curriculum as well, though I presume a project is also involved as part of getting your master's.

Part of me says, pick Illinois or Houston. I think both programs have enough of a track record that you'll network your way to residency opportunities if you do well in school.
