I attended my UNC interview on Saturday and just wanted to let ya'll know a few things.

First off, the interview was very laid back, although I think it depends on which faculty member you get. All of the current students seem thrilled to be there and were very friendly and helpful. I have been up to the school several times already, so there wasn't much new for me to see, but people who were there for the first time were very impressed. I talked with several applicants who had already interviewed at other schools and they said UNC was much nicer and more impressive. I would post something over in the interview feedback, but I can't bring up UNC as a school to rate.

As far as numbers go, Dr. Brunson told us that they get 200 in-state applications, interview 150 and accept ~64 residents. Out of state applicants number 600, with 90 being interviewed for ~16 spots. So if you have an interview - congratulations, you've cleared a big hurdle. It's still competitive, though, even if you have an interview. Glad I'm a resident. I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys have, here or via PM.

Hi Jaap,
Congrats, Did they give you any hint about you are in?
When would they let you know the decision? What do u feel..
I mean you think you are in? What kind of questions did they ask?
Great man. I am sure with your GPA and DAT...every school
wants you. All the best again!

Hi Jaap
I am also a resident, and am applying there this year, though very late. I thought Dr. Brunson retired? Are you sure those numbers are right? The incoming class is about 75 each year, it would seem that they would accept more just in case people go elsewhere. But I guess if you got in Carolina, why would you go anywhere else. I heard that they choose half the class before Dec 1st and the other half after, is this correct. Also, did you take a tour of the school?, when and where? I volunteered at the school, but have never actually seen all the clinics and such. Thanks and congrats, with your numbers your a shoe in, if there is ever one.

dr. brunson did in fact retire, but will be sticking around to help with admissions until a new full time dean is appointed.

the numbers jaap gives are very accurate, based on both past history and currently received applications. the class size will be just over 80. unc intends to gradually increase class size over the next decade until the class is just over 100. this increase is necessary to address north carolina's distinction as 48th in the country in dentists per capita.

obviously more people are accepted than actually end up in class. however, a state school like carolina has a much lower denied acceptance rate than a private school. so the numbers listed for acceptances pertains to students in class in august. carolina usually goes fairly deep on their out-of-state waitlist and offers acceptance to more than a few of their in state alternates.

the tour offered during interviews covers most of the clinics are newer lab facilities.

in regard to choosing half in dec, i would guess that is about right, since they have 2 interview sessions that are after that date.

No hints were dropped my way, I hope to find out Dec. 1st. Otherwise your application stays active until January when they fill the other half of the class. Then they make two wait lists - one for in state and one for out of state. Each list has 15 names and if an out of state student drops, the replacement comes from the out of state list, etc. Apparantly, they get about halfway down each list by August.

I hope I'm in!

The tour is pretty basic and short, but the facilities are phenomenal. Lots of great students to answer your questions at the interview. There are lots of applicants, but plenty of time to ask questions and talk to admissions staff.

I agree with everything jaap mentioned. The numbers are correct and the school was very impressive. Everything from the facilities to the people. They had 60 or so interviewees and they were right on time the entire morning. (We all finished by 1pm). Very organized and made a great impression on me. It would be very hard to turn down this school in accepted?
