Carving...not an urgent question

The difference between the US DAT and the Canadian DAT is that there is no Organic Chemistry but there is a "carving" section. Also, the test isn't computerized.

The carving section consist of a 'carving' a small cylindrical bar of soap using an exacto-like knife into a geometric shape. Generally, applicants don't score well as it is a difficult section; however, with practice one can achieve a high score.

Also, the Math section is not included on the Canadian DAT unlike the American DAT.

sounds fun! but i bet it's hard

It's not that it's hard, but it's the stress you are under trying to carve this thing. When the tester says "you have 30 minutes to carve", your heart pounds like a jackhammer. The trick is practice....do it everyday (time yourself--otherwise people get sloppy b/c of lost time on test day).

I hate the subjectivity of it though. I got 20 one time...and I wrote the test again with WAYYYYY more carving practice, and I got a bloody 14!!! I swear i thought i did better the second time!

good luck

both those scores look awesome compared to peoples' 3's and 4's......what's the avg for this section?

It basically takes only a tiny error for your score to drop drastically, first time I got a 20, rewrote, did way better on other parts of test because I actually studied but got an 8 🙁. Rewrote again and got a 16. What I hate the most is that everyone is blowing on their soap really loudly to clear the shavings off and they blow it onto the people in front of them......that ticks me off.

well 20 is good...maybe 70th percentile-ish....but it varies per testing session. A 14 is not great. A 3 or 4 means that the carver comepletely screwed up the carving*****. The average is about a 17.

****Disclaimer***
I am in no way judging somebody who got a 3 in carving. I got a 16 in RC that has TOSSED me out of competition for this application cycle.

Dude I wrote 3 times too.....doesn't it suck!? I don't think i can squeeze a fourth attempt out.🙁

It does, costs quite a bit. I dont get too nervous over writing it though. Sad to hear about the RC, that is usually my strongest, I think I got a 24, 95 percentile or something. Hopefully I get in this year.
