Is getting a case report in the Journal of Medicine Case Reports looked at positively or no? I wrote a case report up that's NeuroRadiology related. My goal is to get it published in either "Neurology" or "Clinical Imaging". I found AJNR, however they don't accept case reports. When clicking on the option to submit a case report, it takes me to a pop-up showing the other articles which allow for submissions.

Some of the journals are not in the US and are in Turkey, Italy, etc etc. Does the country of publication matter to PDs? First time doing something like this, so sorry for any stupid questions.

Obviously some journals are more respected than others, so name matters. However, something is definitely nothing, and I would strive to get your work published even if it is in a less than desirable journal (in another country).

Just make sure it's PubMed indexed. Are you a 3rd year? If so, you may want to aim for some of the lower-tier, pay-to-publish case report journals so it will be accepted and on PubMed before ERAS application. If not limited by an ERAS deadline in September, take your time and test the waters.

I've had experience looking for lesser-known/obscure radiology journals to try and publish a case report, try this link and browse the journals:

This link is a text file listing of all the PubMed indexed journals, you can use CMD/Ctl+F to search for 'radiol-', 'imag', 'neur', etc to find radiology, imaging, neurology-type journals: ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pubmed/J_Medline.txt

Thanks fellas. JoshST, thanks for the tip about making sure it's PubMed indexed. When going to "American Journal of NeuroRadiology" they don't accept CaseReports. When clicking on submitting one, a pop-up opens up showing journals which do. I'm going to aim for "clinical imaging" since it's indexed in PM.

I'm a 4th year now, but since I'm an IMG I'm not applying until this September, so I'm certain I won't need to go the pay-for-publish route. How much do you guys think having a case report or two published can help an applicant?

no one should ever have to pay to publish. there are so many throwaway journals that are pubmed indexed

For sure, but I think Josh was just hinting at if I was at time constraint and needed it published to help with the match.

Yeah, because many of them are aimed at profit and/or making a name for their pay-to-publish journal, they often advertise expedited reviews and publishing once accepted.

Agreed, it's a corrupt system, however, they attract so many people because authors are attracted to fast pubs, lower rejection rates, as a last resort for papers that have got rejected from 5 other journals, etc.

PLOS ONE has a good cause at heart, but many of their copycats do not. One of the founders of PLOS ONE did a reddit AMA recently, an interesting read: http://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/2sekp6/science_ama_series_i_am_michael_eisen_professor

Best of luck with getting it accepted.

It's hard to say how much it will or won't help - it will be an attractive thing on your application and ~may~ help you get interviews you wouldn't have gotten without any pubs and/or research.

Write it up and try to have fun with the whole process of it.
