Hey everyone!

Was recently accepted to both Case Western and Oakland University William Beaumont. Case will cost $65k + living expenses, and OUWB gave me a full tuition scholarship. Interested in internal medicine and then oncology or hospice/palliative care.

Other factors: not sure about the h/p/f curriculum at OUWB and almost-mandatory attendance to get honors grades, but like the smaller size. No huge preference on location for either school. Really interested in the service focus & community feel at OUWB, but also thought Case was very professional and students were very relaxed/not stressed (granted, I interviewed early Sept. before the semester was busy).

Would love your thoughts!

Case definitely has a better match list for nearly every specialty including IM (multiple matches at the Brigham/MGH/Hopkins tier that is just completely missing from the IM match at OUWB). That said, it seems people can still get to great places for IM residency from OUWB (Umich and Uwash for example based on their most recent match list).

Like you said social factors seem pretty even. No geographic difference for residency as both are Midwest.

So bottom line, does coming from Case probably help for residency? Yes. Can you still match into good programs in most specialties from OUWB? Sure. So unless you feel dead set on optimizing your chances of going to the tippy top residency programs, Case isn’t worth that price difference and I’d go OUWB. If you work hard at OUWB history would suggest you can still get to some good programs in IM or other specialties.

Hey, not sure if you're still looking for help but I am a current OUWB student (received a full ride as well) and went to CWRU for undergrad! I was in a similar position to you last year, deciding between OUWB and a more "prestigious" school. Match lists can be hard to interpret, too. CWRU has an amazing match list, but OUWB's is good too. We match people to competitive specialties and hospitals, so don't be too quick to dismiss it just because it has a lot of local Michigan hospitals-- it's a bit skewed because most people at OUWB are from Michigan! Here is their most recent match list.

I'm interested in family med/internal med and so for me, it made the most sense to go to the school that was cheapest. I think I'm getting a great education here! Let me know if you have any specific questions I can help with!
