Hey guys, happy to get accepted into some good programs! I will say I have some interest in matching in larger, competitive cities and am open to do a competitive specialty.

Case Western:

Pros:
  • True P/F
  • Great research opportunities and hospitals in the area
  • Flexible curriculum allows for seeking a lot of leadership and other resume builders
  • Culture focuses a lot on wellness
  • T25 (considered T20 by some)
  • Would be easier to match away or if I do something competitive
  • Independent pathways program
Cons:
  • 300K total tuition over 4 years
  • Cleveland is worse than cincy IMO as a city
Cincinnati:

Pros:
  • Still ranked pretty well for a state school (T30-50 depending on who u ask)
  • Research opportunities and culture is good
  • Cincinnati is a better and growing city
  • Attached undergrad
  • Tuition: 43K per year on average
Cons:
  • Quartile ranked system, so not truly P/F (is being evaluated)
  • Not as well ranked or known nationally, so might be harder to match away
So basically, Case has better curriculum and opportunities for away/competitive, but is it enough to pay 130K more than Cincinnati?

Interesting options. Cincinnati is a great school and not much lower ranked then case. I think in this case (ha), idk if it’s worth 130k + interest more to go to a school maybe 20 spots higher. You’d have great opportunities at cinci as well. I think it just comes down to if you want to go to case western for the extra price since you won’t be losing out on many opportunities at cinci.

following as im also in a similar position LOL

would it be easier to match away? when I saw their match lists, most of them were matched in the mid west?? and that worries me bc I would want to go back to the east coast/tristate

I feel that 😭 I’m trying to go out east coast or west coast potentially too, but someone did say people choose to go more midwest by choice bc ppl are settling families there.

I don't attend either schools, but I'm at Ohio State and can offer some advice from my experience of them.

If I were you, I'd take a hard look at what type of residency/career goals you have. If you really want to chase the upper tiers of academia, Case might be worth it. Not saying that you can't achieve that at Cincy, but it's certainly a bit easier at Case. However, Cincy had some stellar matches this year and is very much an underrated school IMO. And you eluded to this, but matching at certain programs is self-selecting and aways/connections can help you match at larger, coastal cities.

I wouldn't pay the cost for Case knowing I had a solid option like Cincy for cheaper. Also, Cincy > UH for adult and peds clinical experience, but the Cleveland VA is top notch. I don't know if clerkships at CC are guaranteed though? Ultimately, your goals are achievable from both schools; it's more of what you can accomplish as an individual that will set you apart.

Thanks for your perspective, I appreciate that.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much I want to chase those upper tiers, although I do constantly want to innovate and I know Case has a better chance of offering that compared to UC. Cincy is definitely underrated though, and yeah, totally agree that the quality of student > quality of school.

In regards to clinical, yes both are great, clerkships at CC are def possible, and their LORs help a lot. I'm just curious how much prestige really matters with STEP 1 P/F. No way to quantify though, and I do think your comment is reassuring to know there isn't a wrong decision here

I was curious, do you know how well Cincinnati matches to larger cities, even in competitive specialties? Do students struggle with that?
I don’t have personal experience with how well certain schools match into competitive specialties, but generally, the more resources a school has—which often correlates with ranking, though not always—the better your chances are. Some schools also have unexpectedly strong programs in specific fields that might not be obvious at first glance.

For example, Cincinnati and Lurie Children’s in Chicago are top programs for pediatric airway training (ENT fellowship). So if that’s your goal, Cincinnati would definitely be a strong choice. That likely translates into a solid ENT match rate for their med students as well.

That said, I think it’s possible to match into a big city from almost any med school—definitely from the two you’re considering.

I’ve been answering these x v y threads and it seems like everyone is about case lol.
Dude you're literally on the waitlist at Case Western you gotta chill on all these threads or at least put a disclaimer, it's on every single one. Not looking very Spartan like.

Due to not wanting to ruin iron mans legacy, I will be no longer commented on X v Y posts. I do not think I was biased, and I have nothing to gain since I am committed somewhere already but futuredoc73 thinks it is biased, and maybe others do as well. I will delete my other comments as well.
Iron man nooooooooo 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 you will be missed
