That's strange....I've talked to an admission coordinator earlier last year and he told me that Case makes their decision right away: Acceptance, Rejection, Alternate list. Maybe you should contact the school if you are not sure if they have received all your info.

Good luck

I received a letter today from Case that said, "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted for admission to our Alternate List at Case...." I wonder what it means to be on Hold?

If you call them tomorrow, let me know what you find out. Thanks

In that case, if you haven't interviewed, then at best you will be interviewing for the Alternate List. That means after when they have any remaining spots after all the acceptances have been confirmed, then they will start taking ppl for the alternate list. If you have interviewed, then that means you are already on the alternate list and will have to wait and see if they will pick you out from the list after and the dust have settled.

I interviewed back in October and received a letter (1st week of December) stating that I was on hold as well. I called to find out exactly what this means and they told me the following. Hold status is "better" than alternate list. The admissions office told me that if there are spots that become available, the people on "hold" will get the first call up and then after all the people on hold are all "called up" then they will look to the alternate list to fill the remaining seats.

I think they are doing this as a safety measure to make sure that they don't over accept as they did last year.

So, it seems as though if you interview at Case you will either (1) Be accepted, (2) Be put on hold, (3) Be put on alternate list, or (4) Get rejected.

Also, I do believe there are two types of holds that Case gives out, a pre-interview hold and a post-interview hold. They give out a pre-interview hold for applicants who, for one reason or another, don't meet the requirements to be invited for interview (i.e. poor performance on a specific part of the DAT like reading or PAT). The post-interview type of hold is more of the type that states that if you would have applied 3-5 years ago, you would have probably got in, but because this year is filled with so many highly qualified applicants, the admissions committee is going to defer until they see how many applicants put down their deposits.

I can't say 100% that this is the way the admissions process is working at Case, but after speaking to many Case students, staff, and admissions committee members, it seems as though this is what they are doing. Every school has a different way of approaching who gets in or not and I think for the people on hold status will not know anything at least until May. I just have a gut feeling that people designated to be on the "hold" list and "alternate" list aren't going to see the light shine too bright this cycle. Remember, last cycle they didn't take anyone off the alternate list and this cycle is more competitive...

Nonetheless, let's all keep our heads up high because we never know what could happen! Also remember that these are just my humble opinions that have accumulated since the first week of December... 😉

What a inconsiderate way to tell you you are on the alt. list. "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted for admission to our .....................................................(Sounds good so far, could this be it? All my hard work has paid off! I'm going to be a dentist 😀 !! Who should I call and tell first?)............................. Alternate List at Case.... 😕 "
What a slap in the face!!

Yeah, I know what your saying. Even though I interviewed for an alternate seat, and was expecting this letter, when I started reading the letter I kind of thought my ticket to dental school arrived. I guess I'll be waiting some more.

I have talked to a person in charge of admissions to clarify the different status (hold and alternate list) and here is what he told me:

Alternate list:

Can be given to you prior to or after interviews

First pool used in their selection for acceptance IF there are some spots available after all the primary acceptance applicants have confirmed their status.

On Hold:

Given out after interviews

Second pool used in their selection IF there are still spots remaining after when all the people in the alternate list have been depleted.

He mentioned that people who are 'ON HOLD' are rarely accepted and that applicants in this status should follow the suggestions listed in their letter - that is, if an opportunity becomes available to you from other schools, it is wise for you to take those into consideration.

Hmmm... this is indeed very interesting because I talked to the director of admissions and the director of student affairs and the admissions office and got conflicting answers. I was told by the admissions office that being on hold "post interview" is actually better than alternate list and if a spot becomes open, then they go to people on hold first.

I'm wondering if there is a misunderstanding of the "On Hold" status because if it is true that people on hold rarely get accepted and are told to follow the suggestions in the letter, then why didn't they put any suggestions in my letter? I know that they put suggestions on "On Hold" letters that they send out to people prior to interviews....I know people that got the "Hold" status prior to interview and they were suggested to do certain things like re-take the DAT....

I also had a personal meeting with the Director of Student Affairs and he told me that being on hold meant that my interview went fine but because of the quality of applicants this year is really high it was more difficult for them to make a decision on me. He also stated that 3-4 years ago, I probably would have gotten in.

I don't know...it seems like nobody really knows...what a blob of confusion! Oh well... 😕

Ya, it is confusing. I've asked Mr. Sherman specifically if On Hold is given higher priority than Alternate List and he said 'No, it is the opposite'. He also said that this On Hold status is nothing new - although this was the first time that I've heard about it.

Either way, I do hope you will get in somewhere....good luck!

I would have to venture out and say that Brian might have been talking about the "pre-interview" hold status....That's the only way this whole thing would make sense! 🙂

It is clean, quiet, and you will have your own bedroom and bathroom. The rent is really fair and you can be either a guy or girl. Let me know if your interested and we will talk more. good look everyone!!

I have been looking for a place to live... Could you give me more in detail? You can send me an e-mail to [email protected]

Thanks 🙂

Yes, his place is fairly nice. It is located at the Waldorf apartment. Basically the rooms are separated by the common room and the kitchen, and he keeps the place pretty clean too! Since he rarely comes on SDN, I will let him know about your inquires and he will contact you shortly as we are in the same class.
