Pls see "Programs with Red Flags" subheading below. BTW Case is on a 2-0-1-1 cycle and I don't think they are offering any spots this year either.
Case Western Reserve: Tiny program that's essentially a private practice group that's contracted by the university. In other words, the attendings are paid like private practitioners with an interest in maximizing volume to fill their pocketbooks. You gotta seriously wonder if they're actually interested in teaching, and from my impression, they aren't. The residents there work like dogs because of that volume. Chairman/Program Director - Tim Kinsella - is known as a pretty shady character around RadOnc circles, having been forced out of Wisconsin because of fraud dealing with Medicare or Medicaid (probably to fill his fat checkbook). He also refuses to work with any PGY2 residents or medical students. He's the only known attending in the department doing major research but recently lost his collaborator David Boothman to another program. Word is that former Program Director John Greskovitch suddenly quit his post in the middle of the application process and was in the midst of interviewing for jobs at other programs but is currently still on as one of the four teaching faculty.

I wonder how adequate their referral patterns/volume can be when you have the Cleveland Clinic right up the road....

its enough, they both have dozens of satellite centers for referrals. they also tend to attract a different patient population....the clinic attracts people from around the world, and the more borgy population of cleveland...

cwru has a decent program, its small though, only 4 residents and a fellow. they were trying to expand their resident numbers to 6 a few years back, but i guess it didnt happen. their program has gone through a lot of changes/turnover, specifically dealing with attendings. not sure why. someone made a comment about kinsella being shady...and i agree...but that is only because of the rumors ive heard. ive met him a dozen times, he is kinda quirky and wierd, but seems nice.
cleveland is an incestious town with respect to people going back and forth b/w the clinic and cwru (in all specialties), and a lot of the residents at cwru are from ohio.
the clinic is a fantastic program....but slightly malignant.

the conferences at ccf...at the beginning of each one (treatment planning, lectures, etc), they pick a resident and pimp the hell out of them. its not malignant (if you know your stuff) but its def uncomfortable...enough so that the residents complain about it. also, they work pretty hard, from 7-6pm, and the attendings have pretty high expectations of their residents. they are a great program with world class attendings (macklis, suh, etc) though.
