CASPer seems weird.

3 questions that have to be answered in 5 minutes?

And the situations can be very open ended and you can essentially write whatever you want.

And how exactly are they grading these in an objective manner?

I know @gyngyn has some strong feelings about CASPer

Can someone summarize what this test is? Or send me a link describing it?
Is it completely separate from AMCAS?

Just signed up for it. Anyone have resources to practice?

You did the practice exam too?

As far as I’m aware there isn’t much evidence that practice helps.

The test is supposed to be like an MMI but written. You get ethical scenarios and write your response to them in under 5 minutes. The test is graded by a number of reviewers and you never see your score.

The test makers themselves provide a few practice scenarios, i prepared by writing my answer to their example scenarios in under 5 minutes so I could get used to how fast I’d need to cobble together an answer for the real thing.

You can also take a look at UWSOM’s medical ethics page and practice writing answers to those in under 5 min.

A lot of schools are not using this seriously yet— I’ve heard that they’re gathering data for the first few years before it becomes a real tool for them.

In sum (from what I’ve gathered) it’s not something to stress too much over.

The Casper test is a lot like an MMI interview conducted in writing. Understand how you would handle typical MMI questions, practice a few times, and let the chips fall where they may.

Are we supposed to be banging out essays in under 5 mins?

I didn't realize you had to input the schools you are applying to before registration....guess I will wait until I get MCAT scores back.

That is silly.

I believe you can register for the exam and then add schools later. It doesn't make a difference in cost ($10 for taking the exam, $10 for every report sent to school).

If you’re going to practice anything for the CASPer, let it be typing speed. No need to practice answering ethical questions, really. They are straightforward.

The most important things to remember for CASPer:
1. ALWAYS follow company policy (whatever that dictates in your scenario).
2. Be kind and empathetic...a team player. What’s best for the team AND the individual? Think like a diplomat.

I haven't heard CASPer having any effect on admissions statuses this past cycle.

What if any effect will CASPer have on admission decisions? Being an applicant this cycle I wonder: will it have any effect this cycle?

Are you kidding me? More ways they can siphon $$ out of our wallets, eh?

I'm going to have to start working seriously this upcoming summer.

The Casper has got to be the most asinine "test" I've taken on my path to medical school. About the only way you can practice for it would be to increase your typing speed (as previously mentioned).

I am agog to see metrics on Casper performance vs Med school performance.

does it make a difference if we do CASPer by july 18 or july 30? i am submitting my primary this week.
Your primary will take 4-6 weeks to be verified. CASPer takes 4 weeks. If you take the CASPer July 30, all of the schools that require it will be sitting on your secondaries until basically September. By then, if you interview, there's a good chance it's only for a waitlist spot. I wouldn't risk it.

Most schools won’t hold secondaries for CASPer, but they will hold interview invites.

Whoa chill interviewing in September does not mean you’re interviewing for a waitlist spot.
No, but by September they're not filling fall or early winter interview spots anymore. Don't get me wrong, some people get in. I've been told by a number of universities that although you can submit your secondaries in September, your chances are going to be pretty darn slim.

If I remember correctly, something like 75% of interview spots are still available on September 1st...

Maybe it really just depends on whether it's a rolling admissions program. The first thing I was asked in my application review from last cycle was when I applied. Just because they receive your application, doesn't mean anyone is going to see if for a month. It takes some schools a week just to look at your MCAT score and GPA, before sending secondaries.
Not all schools will hold your review back for a CASPer score, probably because it's just a benchmark number for them. Some schools are pretty upfront though - no one will look at your application until your score arrives.

That can’t be possible, when the adcoms on here repeatedly advise that complete by Labor Day is early!

How long did it actually take to grade the CASPer test for those who took it? I know they say 3 weeks, but does it really take that long?

Earlier dates had them graded faster, but the more recent dates have taken almost the full three weeks. Expect your test to take the full 3 weeks to be graded.
