Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible to apply for 3 year EM programs that do not require a preliminary year (ie the majority of them, categorical) as advanced position while simultaneously submitting a supplemental list for preliminary/transitional years. This is how a few advanced position EM programs work and how all other advanced position programs (anesthesia, derm, etc) work.

Thanks

No. You can do a prelim year, and then reapply. However, you can't rank categorical places in advanced slots on ERAS.

I am also wondering if doing a prelim year of internal medicine then reapplying for EM would make an IMG who already has going for them excellent grades/recs/boards/USexperience more competitive for EM than they otherwise would be.

Anyone with thoughts on this?

I think this could backfire and you may be looked upon as someone who couldn't match into EM the first time around and scrambled into a prelim spot if you intentionally didn't rank EM the first time.

Don't waste your time with a prelim year unless you have to (as in you don't match into EM). The experience of floor medicine and floor surgery for a year isn't going to make you much more competitive or prepared for an EM residency. Plus, if you have done so well, why waste your year doing prelim when you could be starting an EM residency. Apply to EM. If you're worried about not making it you can always interview at prelim programs and rank them all lower than your EM programs, that way if you cant match in EM you may still match in prelim/transitional year.

If one wants to apply for an advanced position using a primary list, they apply for preliminary positions by submitting supplemental lists which contain prelims or transitional programs. Is it possible as you suggest to rank prelim programs on a primary (rather than supplemental) list below the categorical EM programs?
