Categorical vs non-categorical internship (OMFS)

Hey all,

What's the difference between a categorical and non-categorical internship? After doing a quick search, non-categorical = not an official program? Why do many people recommend a non-categorical internship year then?

Non cat is just a 1 year internship. A categorical intern is a resident in a full OMFS program at the PGY-1 level.
