Hi, I am a current Junior applying to med school this summer. When I was in high school, I took some classes at a community college in California and did not do so well (mainly because of senioritis). I go to a top 20 school and have a current GPA of 3.74; however with my CC classes calculated in, i have a 3.69. Will med schools really consider the CC classes heavily since I took them in high school and have proven that I can do well at a top 20 school. Has this come up in anyone's interviews? Thanks.

Fortunately, even with the CC classes factored in, your cGPA will be above automatic cut offs. High school and freshman level classes may be given less weight at some schools. They will never be given more weight. I would be greatly surprised if they were ever mentioned in an interview. You've proven you have what it takes to do well in a med school curriculum with your more recent excellent grades.

Also, you have the added benefit that the classes you did poorly in were very early in your academic career. You have shown a strong upward trend since then, which is always a good thing and looked upon favorably by adcoms.

No unless you took all your pre-reqs at a CC. Then, they may hurt you.

I had the same thing happen to me. I took calculus courses at my high school and signed a form stating that they would be considered classes at a local community college not realizing the full implications of what I had done. I was a senior after all! However, after speaking to counselors, they all told me that I had to report those grades. I just wanted to mention that b/c I'm not sure if you're really asking if those grades need to be mentioned on your application. The answer is YES YOU HAVE TO. However, no it probably won't count that much against you, b/c they can tell you took the classes in high school and your GPA is high enough to compensate for it.

Oh yea, I was definitely planning on reporting them. I would be too afraid of consequences later down the road to not report my CC grades. I was just wanting to know the expected impact they would have on my application. Its unfortunate but I can't do anything about it now🙁. I'm just hoping adcoms will "look over" that part of my app.
