Hi everyone. So I'm a transfer student currently attending UC Davis. I got into all the UC's with a 3.33 gpa but chose Davis. So far I have a 4.0 gpa through 2 quarters and 1 summer session. I had really good ec's when I was at jc and worked near full time for almost 2 years. Work is what brought my gpa down at JC. Right now I'm volunteering at a student-run clinic and I was an intern at the ER not too long ago.

I went to a rather "tough" JC. The science courses over there a pretty tough and some were harder than the classes at UCD in my opinion. Lots of my friends took their science courses at other JC's in order to avoid the tough profs at my JC.

Anyhow, I wound up getting a few C's in the pre req courses that I took at JC. I got a C in 1st semester physics and a C in 2nd semester of Bio. I was wondering if I could retake these courses at UC Davis in order to boost my gpa, since the grades will be averaged out in the end. I want to "redeem" myself.

I plan on taking a gap year after I graduate, so that I can prep for the MCAT. So I'm not really in a rush.

Try it. I went to UC Davis and there are many great bio professors (take bis 2c from keen or rizzo, he's one of the coolest profs ever). Physics 7 (premed physics) at UC Davis is positively horrific though fyi (in terms of professors you can get the best one is Coleman). It's taught with a constructivist pedagogy which means professors and TAs don't really explain the material and youre expecting to discover answers to ambiguous discussion/lab material in horrendously poorly structured group exercises. If you're able to study on your own and get the material down you'll be better off, albeit physics 7 is garbage at Davis. If you're good at math maybe consider the 9 series that's calculus based. I also recommend using each summer session at Davis because they're a great way to start off your education at Davis and you can focus on one course at a time. Summer sessions allowed me to actually graduate on time and you get the same if not better quality education over a shorter period of time.

I'm not sure UCD will allow you to retake the same classes, in any case they didn't allow me to do it.I had one C+ in my whole academic career and they didn't allow me to retake it.
Also, physics 7 at UCD sucks! Had to relearn all concepts by myself. MCB department is strong ( that's where I TA;-) so I would advise just to take some upper division bio courses to boost your GPA.

Great post. Also, UC Davis has a great heavy-hitter Evolution and Ecology Department. A lot of the professors are from top schools and are legendary in their field.

Hello,

I'm very interested in your opinion about my current plan. I'm a veteran leaving the service after 13 yrs in order to accomplish my dream of becoming a doctor. As per my wife "guidance" we are moving to Sacramento , so this is my plan:

- Attend Los Rios CC and complete a TAG or enough credits to transfer to UC Davis.

- BS in Exercise Science (Bio) plus all the pre-med requirements, including Biochem, Physiques, Molecular Bio.

- Apply to the surgical internship program, volunteer work at the Davis Hospital, the Veterans Affairs Hospital, and with an overseas program like Los Amigos etc...

- Job versus Internships? I could work as personal trainer or surgical technologist.

- What classes should I definitely take at UC Davis instead of the CC?

- Groups or Points of contacts you recommend that will help me in this journey?

- I will become a California resident, but I'm original from Puerto Rico. Also as a non-trad how you see my chances of going to a California medical school. I have not heard many good things for applicants with similar specs.

Thank you for your insight!

That would be a waste of your time. Doing better the second time around is expected. Having a strong upward trend with new classes is more impressive and important.

Totally understand you on the tough CC. People think I'm joking when I tell them I had easier classes at UC. By any chance was this CC in the bay area?

Yes this CC was in the Bay Area! Funny how you guessed correctly lol. The CC is Ohlone College in Fremont CA, to be exact
I will take what you said into consideration... Sounds like retaking those classes is a waste of My Time

I honestly think that is a good plan. I hear that organic chem at Davis can be rather tough while physics is much easier. I highly recommend that you take gen chem bio and calc1-2 at your cc. Try to volunteer at a hospital on sac while your in cc as well. I also highly recommend that you join a student run clinic when you arrive at Davis.
