Hello all,

I am accepted off of the waitlist for CCLCM (full-tuition scholarship), but have planned to enroll at Northwestern already.

Which would you all pick?

CCLCM

Pros:
Free!
Strong mentorship
Cheaper cost of living
Long drive but still drivable to go home
No tests

Cons:
Small class - could not find friends
extra year (restricted to staying in cleveland?)
Mandatory classes

Northwestern

Pros:
Big city
Strong research
Good match list
Big community

Cons:
Currently 300k COA
Expensive cost of living

What cost should I bargain Northwestern to for it to be worth it to not take on CCLCM and the extra year of research?
What are peoples thoughts on matching to competitive specialties like derm and ortho at huge academic centers on the East coast preferably maybe on the West coast (don't want to stay in the midwest)?

Thank you!

CCLCM. Cleveland clinic hospital is #2 in the world. Good luck finding better research, mentors, and WLB than that. Free tuition makes this a no brainer

Kinda hard to make a pick here without much more information. Why don't you want to stay in the midwest? If it's weather and that's a big deal, you probably won't be happy at either but especially not at CCLCM because the city is smaller.

Btw, voted NW but now that I clicked it, I think CCLCM is better here. Thought initially that Chicago vs. Cleveland was big (since I'd hate to live in cleveland, have heard ppl there aren't happy, have heard that living in Chicago is reasonable). But now that I think about it more, I feel like the two cities have similar culture, weather. While Cleveland is smaller, I feel like you'd still have ample social opportunities there (went there during the summer solstice). Might be completely wrong here though bc I haven't lived in either place.

Also, now I'm re-reading, CCLCM was the one closer to home. Imo, i feel like that matters.

Tbh the more I'm typing the more I think that CCLCM is better, even if NW was free. You'll have to do a solid amount of research for derm, so might as well add a year to do that & not be stressed. CCLCM and NW are comparable in prestige too. So yeah go to CCLCM, assuming that your factors listed are exhaustive.

Thanks for the feedback!

I am originally from the east coast and would like to go back to be closer to my family and significant other. Which has more prestige in terms of the match?

What other factors do you think I should be considering?

I wouldn't pass on the free tuition for Cleveland. If NU matches the total cost, I would maybe consider NU more closely. Our mandatory class schedule is pretty underrated. I think our mentoring is also great. You won't have any problem getting research done in derm or ortho.

What if they come back and it's like 10k a year tuition? Something I'm considering is MD/MBA which is better at NW i think?

The main thing is that I wonder if CCLCM could be inflexible where I can't explore my tangential interests in medicine outside of pure research and med school stuff

Almost every med school curriculum (except like Stanford or Dell) is pretty inflexible in this regard. If NW comes back with significant scholarship it might be worth considering depending on you personal finances, which others can’t really tell u about.

Regarding the MD/MBA, you can take a LOA at CCLCM to do an MBA at another school. But I would do more research on it if I were you, those things are expensive with little utility except in specific circumstances.

I’m confused by what exactly your dilemma is here. Why are you so stuck on NW? The Cleveland Clinic is arguably better in nearly every way ways.

Outside of finances, what ways? Could you write it out for me - I would really appreciate it! Thank you

I’m pretty sure the MBA is not free. I’ve heard it’s expensive, but don’t know how financial aid plays into it.

They came back with the improved aid offer and are giving me half off tuition which comes out to around 300k total for 4 years of NW and 150k total for 5 years of CCLCM? Is the one year less of NW worth the extra loans? I could cover the 30k a year at CCLCM but would need to take out loans to cover the nearly 80k a year at Feinberg

Thoughts?

I would (politely) ask them to up their offer again, citing differences in COL, etc

NU’s match list this year was WAYYY better than CCLCM, which is just a 5 year sponsored degree to Case Western…

wait how so? this is incredible for such a small sample size of ~30. all IM matched to t10 programs lmao

Surgery… not so much
not sure wym by this. 2 neurosurgery + 1 plastics out of a class size of 30 is incredibly high achieving. You see those numbers in student bodies of 120+. if you're talking about just 1 gen surg that's clearly just student preference. This school matches incredibly well, unless NU is placing ppl exclusively to Mass Gen, Hopkins, and UCSF it is simply not "matching way better than" CCLCM
