CCOM or NSU-COM?

Sorry for another school comparison thread, but I have narrowed my choices down to these two schools and can't decide which to attend, I'm almost thinking about flipping a coin. Please post opinions and comments. Anything helps.

It depends on your priorities. Both have good locations. I don't really know much about NSU, but I thought CCOM was one of the best out there. But its also pretty expensive.

you are going to receive biased answers no matter what... Obviously since I chose NSU I'm not going to tell you to go to CCOM, and someone who chose CCOM is not going to tell you to go to NSU. There are positives and negatives about each school. i suggest that you search this forum since there are numerous threads about each of these schools.

I chose CCOM. Why?

Clinicals: as Brodie said, can't beat 'em with a stick.

History/Reputation: one of the founding schools, long tradition, well-known/well-respected, lots of practicing grads, deep penetration into the medical community (all these things are helpful come match time, so I'm told).

Location: everyone keeps telling me how awesome Chicago is.

Nova's a good school too, I'm not knocking it. I know a spine surgeon that went there.

With regards to CCOM, I've heard people say that the testing schedule is a negative. From what I understand they have Monday morning tests at 7:30 am, every week, sometimes more than once a week (or something along those lines). I've also heard that some consider it a positive since it keeps you on top of your game.

I don't care either way, and it wasn't a factor at all in my decision.

Another thing I liked about CCOM was that OMM was only once a week. Nova has OMM spotted throughout the week. I just wanted to do my time in one allotment and be done with it.

I have personally been to both schools. They both have great but vastly different locations. There are major differences between the schools and what you decide is right for you may be different to someone else.

I highly suggest you go visit both schools again (yes i know this is expensive) sit in on a class, talk to students without the pressure of an interview. See what atmosphere is best for you, that will greatly determine your happiness.

For me I loved CCOM, but I also loved Nova. Given the choice which I don't have since I was rejected from CCOM, I think now I would choose Nova.

For me CCOM does not record their lectures which is a large problem, I like to relisten to them. Also CCOM seemed a little more stuffy (please no one take offense) when I was there, Nova seemed more laid back. CCOM seems to have a better reputation but it will all depend on how YOU do in school and on the boards, so where you went to medical school won't matter as much.

Unfortunately, the only one who can make this decision is you. Make a list of the positives and negatives for each school and I know you will make the right choice for YOU.

No not stuck up I just didn't feel like the students were as friendly.

Ok..even though this is biased and I feel that it would be better for you to search different threads on this forum, Ill give you the reason why I chose nova over the other schools I was accepted to.

1) Location- I have lived in Buffalo for the past 21 years of my life, I am ready to move to a location where there is a warmer temperature year round

2) Cost- This school was one of the lower tuition schools that I was accepted to. The lowest tuition school I was accepted to, LECOM-E was decent, however I didn't like the one building campus.

3) The Campus- I come from a large research university. Nova is very similar to the school I went to for undergraduate so since I enjoyed my undergraduate it came naturally that I wanted to go to a school that was similar.

4) People- I wont say that this was the most organized or friendliest staff at the schools I interviewed at, but for some reason I really clicked with them. For lack of a better word, I got the "feeling" from the people at nova.

5) Rotations- Anyone can argue that the rotations at the school that they chose "cannot be beaten with a stick" but any school that is accredited is going to have decent rotations...Bottom line, no matter what rotation in the specialty of your choice that you do, you wont match into it if you don't get the grades.

I have OPP lecture on Tuesdays for an hour and then lab Tuesday afternoon... I guess if you're group A you have lecture on Tuesday and lab on Thursday...but we totally have one lab a week....I think you may be confused by our schedule. A and B aren't "session one" and "session two" (as in: everyone attends both labs) A and B are the halves of the class that we're separated into. All our lectures are given to the whole class at once (so till noon, we're all together), and we normally don't have lectures on mondays (test days) then on tuesdays the group A people get to go home at noon, and the group B people stay for OPP lab. On wednesdays Group B goes to histo, while group A is in CP then we swap. On thursdays group B does anatomy then goes home. Group A does OPP then goes to anatomy. Fridays there are no labs. 🙂 The online schedule is kinda wonky. if you wanna see what ONE section of the class does in a day, check out http://www.freewebs.com/nsucom

Yeah, I know. I was just saying that at CCOM it's one 4 hour slog on Wednesdays. There's no separation between lab and lecture, from what I gathered. So you don't run into Group B's situation where you are doing it two days of the week.

Heh. I'd take a 1 hour and a 2 hour to a straight 4 hour any day! 😎


to the OP that's a tough call .CCOM is an AMAZING school, fantastic long standing reputation. I don't know much about it other then that. I know I like nova though. Good luck in your decision!

Yeah, I'm trying to ignore both of those factors, although its pretty hard to ignore the weather in FL especially since its 2 degrees and snowing where I'm at right now.
