Hello,

I’m starting at CCOM in August and I have the opportunity to secure some of my 1st & 2nd year text books at no cost. My only problem: I can’t get anyone at CCOM to tell me which texts are routinely used (I spoke with both the dean’s office & the campus bookstore). I know that some books probably vary from year-to-year, but the dean’s office gave me the impression that there are a good number of books that are used consistently.

I’m looking for help putting together a list of books that are used during 1st and 2nd year. Any assistance you all could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

Bumping. I couldn't get them for free like you, but I could half.com them as opposed to throwing away gobs of needless money at the campus bookstore.

i can tell you what i've used so far (i'm an ms1, almost 2 quarters in) but in general the lecture notes are very sufficient

biochem they recommend the lipponcots illustrated review...i like it, but it isn't absolutely necessary

histology you dont really need a text, and any atlas would work to look at. i had a book by ross lying around so i used that for its pictures along w/ 2 other atlases by gartner and berman. plus various med schools sites have more than enough resources (i liked loyola's)

for anatomy they use a text by moore and daley, but i woudl say less than half my class actually uses it consistently. for joining soma (which itself had an $80 price tag) at the beginning of the year they gave us a netter's atlas, but i find myself prefering grant's now

for our intro to clinical med class we use mosby's guide to physical examination

for physiology notes are sufficient and the faculty themselves say use whatever texts u want as a resource b/c for diff topics diff books are better/worse...i like the board review series for exam style ?'s and on our last exam was on ekg's...a lot of ppl used the dubin book

that's all i got off the top of my head, see you next year!

I'm currently a 2nd year at CCOM. 1st year I'd go w/ Netter's and definitely Rohen's (it is an atlas w/actual pics). Note: your cadevar will look vaguely like the pics in Rohen's if you're lucky. Also, you have to get a Mosby's. It is a very good book. Histo get one atlas and use websites. Biochem use your undergrad text. Physio use your undergrad notes. Neuro get the brown atlas. I can't remember who it by. DO NOT BUY THE HUGE OMM BOOK!!! A great thing about CCOM is that the lecture notes are excellent. You may feel pressured at the beginning of school to get texts b/c you feel that you are missing something. Don't waste your money buying the recommended books. Also, when it comes time to buy equipment, buy the cheapest stuff that is offered. You'll seldomly use during your 4 years. I can't emphasize this point enough. They try to make it sound like a necessity to drop $1000 buying equipment (which I did). If you have any questions PM me.

Thanks for the input, chief_agith and bbake87. 😀

Since I won't be paying for any of the books, I'm willing to get whatever will be remotely helpful.

Any chance this is an opportunity that can be benefited by others?

Sorry, Supervic8, as much as I wish I could extend my free text book offer to everyone, I don’t think it’s possible. It’s one of those friend of a friend of a guy knows a big wig at a major medical text book publisher deals. Frankly, I’m surprised I got the offer.

The books I use are Netter Atlas, Rohen's Color Atlas, a Histology Atlas (cant remember the name/ i gave it away), Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination 6th ed., and occasionally the biochemistry lippincott illustrated review . The notes are so detailed here that you dont need a biochem, physiology, OMM, histology or anatomy text. I NEVER used any of those. But if they are free get them...

THe physio text isPhysiology 5th ed. Berne, levy, koppen and stanton (2004)
Anatomy - Clinically Oriented Anatomy 5th ed. Moore, Dalley
OMM - Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine 2nd Ed. Ward 2003
Psychiatry - Behavior and Medicine 4th ed. Danny Wedding

I'm currently an MSIV...and i would suggest actually waiting till school starts to get books, because half the stuff i got before med. school was pretty useless. The lecture notes given are real thorough and after reading those you don't have much time to look at anything else. Mmany of the courses are just one quarter and getting a $100 book is kinda useless. Also, there are several options to which book in which subject and preference depends on your learning style. Also try to get books that you think you would use again for board review. It really helps to mark the stuff and read it during the quarter and makes studying for boards a ton easier. Also remember, that they are constantly coming out with newer versions too with better pictures and more medical updates.

I would suggest:

Anatomy: netter's and Rohen's, and some neuro atlas, don't get the text
Histology: Some atlas...i think i just checked out a book before semester, because you won't ever use it afterwards
Physiology: BRS Physiology
Cardiology: Dubin's
Path: BRS path
OMM: Savarese's OMM review book (gold standard for COMLEX I/II OMM review, but don't really need one for the class)
Biochem: just used notes, most of them were copies from Liponcotts text
Pharm: Lecture notes are all you need

Buying textbooks while a student at CCOM in my opinion is worthless. I've never not been able to check out what I needed, granted it may not be the newest edition, for the entire quarter.

I mean, how much changes in physio, path, etc?

Oh, what about Pharm you say? There's a brand new 2006, pharm textbook that I've had since September - that I got from the library.

Well, the OP said she could get the books for free so she might as well get them.
