Seems to be a controversial drug... what does everyone think of it?

And for anyone who has read the study "Results of a Double-Blind, Randomized Trial of Ceftobiprole Treatment of Complicated Skin an Skin Structure Infections Caused by Gram-Positive Bacteria":

1. Why is MIC important when comparing antibiotics?

2. Why are only aztreonam and metronidazole allowed to be used with a cephalosporin and not other antibiotics?

3. Can the gender of the patients affect the results?

4. Why is osteomyelitis in the exclusion criteria?

Use the search function for Ceftobiprole to read the previous discussion.
Then ask these questions.

Aww, come on. You can repeat your answers over and over. You know you like to hear yourself type. :meanie:

See...I'm not like you. I wanted the OP to read the previous threads for him/her to have an understanding of the drug and why it'll be useless. Those questions above weren't actually addressed before...they're not great questions but... 🙄

You know I'm a stickler for the search function.

Well, then search and post the links!

I searched this morning for my own benefit. I rarely do other's people work for them anymore, and besides, I used my weekly quota of link posting already posting a link yesterday for someone else in another thread by doing a search, so nuh!

And what have you learned about our 5th gen ceph?

It's expensive, can use vanc and pip/taz for much cheaper. Shouldn't be on formulary anywhere. Covers MRSA, pseudomonas, and enterococcus. Used for SSIs. Has snazzy colored vials.

Thanks for making me do shroomy's work. 😡

LOL! Now you can impress your upperlings at your residency with this knowledge.. except the "expensive" part because that's just my speculation. I'd think they'll price it at between Tygacil to Zyvox.. probably closer to Zyvox.

will the vials be any snazzier than Zosyn? Because those are some awesome colored vials.

Yeah, whoops for you. 😉

I typed without thinking. However, I don't feel too bad, I work in one of the world's largest cancer centers, and can count the times both drugs have been used here on one hand.

What you want in the USA is Fusidic acid (Fucidin). Cheap and very potent antistaphyloccal. However, used single for two weeks as resistance can develop. However, resistant bugs not very viable and tend to die off naturally. Fucidin best not used on open ward.

I think Rifampin is pretty. Some of the chemos have really cool colors.

I'll tell you a story of Rifampin. I believe I told it before.

I interned at a Children's while in RX school. Of course ped hospitals are notorius for making oral suspensions. You name an orally bioavailable drug, we had a syrup, solution, or suspension for it.

My first day ever in a hospital pharmacy, (lord..I knew nothing..:meanie: ) the pharmacist told me to shake this bottle and pour the drug into a 1 oz amber bottle. So I grabbed the bottle and started to shake it pretty hard.. after all, the liquid seemed very thick.

Well, the lid wasn't tight and as the lid flew open, the thick, red, and gooey suspension exploded everywhere. You should've seen the ceiling. Well, you should've seen the look on everyone's face. Hell, you should've seen me... red crap all over me.

The pharmacist.. bless her heart really tried hard to stay calm..tho she did look frustrated as she said, "I just got these jeans and shoes (white).

Years later, I was playing golf with her husband.. and mentioned the story to him. He looked at me and said.. "that was you?????" "She was pissed at you for years."

I survived the incident.. and here I am today! :meanie:

Cheap??? If it's new on the market, the pharma will do everything they can to rip off everyone.

I used to be the queen of making these. Fun stuff.

awww. I work at a hospital with a large children's hospital- we have to do that stuff too.

One of my first days I managed to explode a bottle of guiafenisin on myself. It bleached my shirt!!!! Makes you wonder about what you're putting in your body sometimes.

Neither doxycycline nor chloramphenicol stains come out of clothes. Ever. Thanks, horse! I really wanted you to drool your meds back out down the side of my shirt!

The rabies vaccine I got (don't know mfr) was a stunning purple.

Fucidin has been on european market since 1961, so well out of patent. Today had script for 5 x 100ml bottles syrup for child with osteomylitis.

Private script cost would be about $10/bottle.

I did the same thing my first time working in the unit dose section. No one ever told me that you're not supposed to exchange air with the oral syringe adaptors...

And as far as colors go...I like the banana bag. Simple and useful.

This has already been posted -- if I wanted to read your story, I would have used the search function. 🙂

Do you know one of the first signs of aging is when someone tells the same story over and over again... Well, I'm there.
