jrfromks and AB--
Congratulations on the scholarships! I chose that over the military right now because the military is a much bigger commitment and I'm not ready for that! I know a few residents here in Wichita right now that received the primary care scholarship and they all feel very positive about it; none that I've talked with regret accepting it.
As for the barbecue, I think that's an awesome idea! I'm definitely interested.
Also, jr-- I think you were the one that posted the info that we won't receive financial aid notification for a couple weeks yet. Just wanted to say thanks for the info, as I was stressing.

Hey guys--
Sorry I haven't posted on here much. I haven't read this thread for quite a while so I spent the last 20 minutes catching up.
I also considered doing the military thing, but after further evaluation, I decided against it; primarily because of my family. I didn't want to burden them on being gone so much and moving around.
Definitely count me in for the barbecue/party. Also about eating mexican/italian/german......food is my specialty!!!

Congrats to all of you receiving the KS Osteo Scholarship! What areas of primary care are you all considering?

Talk to you later!! August is almost here!!

Chris

I forgot to ask something.....
Is anyone planning on living in the Pinnacle?? It is right next to University Towers, and is cheaper!! I noticed a few of you will be residing in the University Towers, so we can do some studying at your place or in my Pinnacle Penthouse!!

Anyway, just wondering

Chris

Hi CTers and adopted CTers!

Just a fleeting thought (I do that a lot)--for our BBQ/picnic, we should have a local grocery store donate the food to us (they can write it off as a donation). Maybe the mgmt at CT could help us out. It never hurts to ask! I mean think about it...having us students in the neighborhood enriches the neighborhood somewhat, and we are a captive audience to go to their store(s)! They should donate the food. If not, at least we tried, right?

I mean, I'm also thinking, I wonder how many people would like to partake? I sure wouldn't want anyone to be left out. I wonder about CTers we haven't met yet...I mean I wonder if CT is filling the place up.

Maybe we could just have a sign-up sheet during orientation week somewhere in the halls. Did I see someone mention Friday the 16th might be a good date? I think that sounds cool.

We'll just have to think about it. Keep posting your thoughts on this, everyone! Everything I mentioned here is just "thinking out loud". I would be happy to help coordinate the shindig with anyone who's interested!

Whaddya think?
M.

Right on Mary!! I am with you all the way. Friday sounds great; let me know what I can do to help. I think it would be worth a try to get the donated food. But then again, who knows how those KC people are. Some of the KC people I have met seem to only care about themselves. I am not generalizing here, just a few of them I have met have been this way. But then I have met a slew of KC people that are awesome!!

It is worth a shot!!! Count me in!!

Chris

Mary,
I'm definitely up for the barbeque! You know, when we visited there there was a terrific barbeque place about a block up from it, but somewhat expensive. It was good, but we may be better off asking a local grocery store. Even if we could get the meat donated, anyone who wanted to come could bring chips or something.
I bet CT is filling up fast, as it was 1/2 occupied as of late April.
FYI: I was talking last night to a 3rd year peds resident here in Wichita that graduated from UHS (he's in our allopathic residency program via Wesley Hospital). He said he couldn't say one bad thing about the school and it was an amazing experience. We also talked about CT; he was really excited to hear about the renovation of the old hospital because he said it was a major loss to everyone and just sat there for many years. Just another reassuring reason that we're all getting the best education.
Des:)

Mary,

Great ideas for planning Girl, count me in!! I think we should definitely invite others to join, as our 'core group' of SDNers will probably be busy organizing the thing!! Definitely call CT & local places to see if we can get at least the major stuff donated (meat, etc) and I somehow recall CT advertising grills & the like, so maybe we should give them a heads up that we want to utilize those assets STAT!! If you need any help or more ideas, you know where to find me... (us--ON SDN!!)

just a little FYI. The 9th floor in CT was the terminally ill ward so you can bet little spirits will be roaming around your apartments....

should I bring my own veggie burgers??

OK,
So when did you all get your confirmation for CT? I sent my stuff in a while ago and still have not received a final confirmation.

And on another topic, I am now happily home again in Pennsylvania and our of the army! :)

Guys/Gals,
Thanks for the ideas so far. Keep 'em coming! I figure in a few weeks I'll start making some inquiries to stores and CT. Solie, hopefully you won't have to bring your own Veg. Burgers, stores nowadays have them! But then again we ARE going to be living in Kansas City, center of the Barbecue Belt!!! We'll have to check it out. :)

I'm so nervous, excited, scared...I just try to keep thinking happy, fun thoughts!

Anyone else here a SpongeBob Squarepants fan?!?! :) Bahahahhaaha!

Hey everyone!

I will be living way, way out by the airport (have a 12 year old & 3 pets), but I would like to get to know all of you as well.

If you decide to have a barbeque and open it up to the rest of the class, can you post on the UHS link so I (we) don't miss it? Also, perhaps we can plan something (another time) at the apartments where I'll be living. There is sand volleyball & a swimming pool there.

I can't remember who said it, but someone mentioned being nervous about moving, new friends, new school, etc. I definitely agree. Everything about our lives is about to change. But from what I can tell from posts on the UHS & CT links, we have some awesome classmates who will become lifelong friends. I'm so glad I chose UHS. I think it will be a great place to call home for the next few years.

Take care! (I'll quit being mushy now! ha! ha!)

UHS2005--
How did you get that info about the 9th floor? I am soooo superstitious anyway, and it's just my luck that I'm on the 9th floor! Ahhhhh! I was already creeped out and now my fear is confirmed.....
I can't wait to start school and I'm so excited to meet all of you -- we're going to have a great time.

All,

I finally got confirmation that I've been approved for CT, although I don't know what floor I'm on yet. This barbeque sounds like a fun idea. So I don't have to back search, can someone just tell me when you plan to have the barbeque? And once again, I would like to express how wonderful it is to be out of the army!

Hi Everyone,
I talked to April at CT the other day. I told her that I've been chatting with a few of my fellow CTers online, etc. She thought it was great. I told her about our bbq and she thought that was great also. However, she wished me luck in asking for donations from local stores, although it wouldn't hurt to ask. So I think when I get down there I'll try to meet a store manager and see what I can do.

Other than that, she was going to fax me a form that I can sign that will allow UHS to release my financial aid letter to CT so they can verify that I'm going to pay rent. I haven't gotten the form yet. Has anyone else gotten this form?

And it sounds like CT mgmt is making up some kind of phone book or something for us to have...maybe with local stuff. It's not available yet, she said.

Friday, July 19 is when I'll be arriving in KC. I anticipate that John and I will be completely exhausted from the long drive (16 hours?) and moving. We'll probably spend the rest of the weekend relaxing before he flies back to Cleveland. I wish CT had a pool. The jacuzzi will have to do! Is anyone else going to be moving in around that time? :)

Have a great weekend everybody!
 M.

Hello All-
Amout the bbq- since I am already here in KC I am willing to start with any preparations that you guys feel are necessary. I agree that it will be hard to get anything donated, but maybe if we charge $3-5 for each person, we could have everything all ready. Another option is to just buy the meat(charge $1 or see if someone will donate) and have a sign up sheet for dessert, salads, pop, fixings, ect. I think that we need to have a flier or sign-up sheet ready for the first day of orientation so we know how many to plan for. Also, where are we going to have this thing? Does anyone who owns a house want to volunteer? If I move into the lofts I would have a really awesome club house, but as of right now I don't have anything that will work. Hope you all have a wonderful week!
Amber :D

Amber,
I think we were planning on a bbq at CT. Supposedly they have picnic tables & grills. Thanks for offering to help!

But ya know, maybe we should have additional UHS-SDN get togethers at other apt. complexes as the year goes on.. :)

From what we've talked about so far, a bbq is being planned for Friday evening August 16 at CT. For CTers & "adopted CTers", which translates into anyone who wants to come!!! :) I'm sure there will be a little corner area where all of us SDN CTers/adopteds will be hanging out.

I'm moving in July 19. Amber if you're in the area we'll have to get together for a beer/coffee/something! Anyone else in the area, too! (Anna?) :) :)

I'm getting really excited!!
M.

I would definitely like to find a time to get together early. July 19--that's quick. You'll have lots of freetime. What on earth will you do with yourself?

When you get in town and are settled in, let me know, we'll exchange phone numbers.

So is John your significant other? Where will he be?

Anyway, thats it for now.

drmary, anna, and others in KC-
We should try to get together sometime in July- sounds fun. Is the weekend of July 20th too soon? I will be in New Mexico the next two weeks, so that would probably be the last weekend in July for me. Week nights work well, too. Should we try to set something up now? I am game for whatever.
Amber

Amber/Anna/All--
I'm arriving in KC July 19, plan on relaxing with John the rest of the weekend. He's returning to Cleveland Sun the 21st(henceforth the LDR...), and I'll be....sing it with me now...." All BY MYselllllllfff....All BY MYsellllfff....."

Any weeknight after that is fine fine fine! I somehow have a feeling I'll be sleeping a lot when I first get there. So I will certainly appreciate any company to get me out of the CT.

We'll plan when the time gets closer. Thanks guys!
M.

So now I know, it will be the 5th floor for me. I'm moving in on the 30th, although who knows when my furniture will arrive.

hey all- does anyone happen to know the approx. square footage of the 1 bedroom at century towers?

Hi CJT--
Welcome to the gang! I was told the 1 BR is about 500 sq ft.
Have a good one!
M.

I moved in! Yay!! It's very nice. I'll really like living here. I'm kinda lonely right now b/c I don't really know anyone. Is anyone else who has posted here living here yet? If not, when are you moving in? Hopefully not Aug. 1. That day is going to be a VERY busy move in day.

One of the cool things CT has is these wonderful storage spaces. I put a lot of stuff in mine and it has made the small apt. seem not so small.

Mary is BACK!!!!
M.

Mary,
What's up? I will be arriving in KC august 1st but since you have forewarned me, I might need to move my stuff in on the 2nd. Do you have any idea how many people will be coming in then? I don't really remember too much detail about the apartments, but I do remember thinking the closets were a bit small, Do they even have doors? What are the pros and cons that you see so far? I'm lovin the storage space, Lord knows I hate having boxes and things sitting in corners. I'm glad that you're loving the apartment...sad that you are lonely, have you started chillin with and SDNers yet? See ya soon

DeJarra

Oh yeah, how's the cappucino at that 7-11?

Hi DeJarra!

So nice to hear from you. The day I moved in, a couple of the folks who work here at CT mentioned that on August 1st 30 people were going to be moving in. It's almost impossible. There is only one docking bay that you can back your truck up to. There is no other way to move your stuff in, no other bays or entrances. April said it wasn't acceptable to move things through the lobby---so if you try to, she'll probably stop you. It took us probably about an hour or so to unload the truck into the big hallway. I suppose that in the hallway there is room for several people's belongings, so if you can just get your stuff off the truck and then gradually take it up to the apt, you'll be in good shape. There are a few carts available to move things with. My boyfriend came up with an ingenious idea though. Before we left Cleveland we went to Sam's Club and bought industrial shelving (like you would see in a restaurant kitchen) that comes with casters. We bought two and put them together and loaded them onto the truck without the casters. When we arrived in KC, we took the shelves off the truck and put the casters on. We then used these as transport devices for all my boxes and crap. They are heavy duty, so they can hold a lot of weight. Now I use the shelves in my apartment as.....shelves! One in the kitchen, one in the bedroom.

OK, so anyway, I think that the Metro (which I'm assuming you're getting) is a very efficient little apartment. The bedroom opens up into a walk-in closet area with built in shelves to hang your clothes. In addition, the bathroom is right there off the closet with MORE built in cabinets. The bedroom has a built in shelving/closet as well. Once I got all my boxes and crap into the storage locker, the place looks pretty nice! There are some feng shuei issues  but I'll get it together! Trust me, I had ALOT of stuff! I'm on the 10th floor...so you'll have to come visit. Email me and I'll give you more details.

I like the little gym, the veranda is nice to sit out and have a beer and relax, the hot tub is nice...there's a fax and copy machine and several study rooms.

The main thing I'm bummed about is that they won't sign for UPS packages for you. You have to be here to accept it. And if you keep missing the delivery, you'll have to go pick it up somewhere, God knows where. I have recommended to my loved ones to send things via US Mail, since there are a few large mailboxes for bigger things.

I went out with "mompremed", Catherine the other nite. We had a lot of fun! She was celebrating her recent acceptance. It was so nice of her to invite me along! I haven't met any other SDN CTers.

The BBQ is still on, as far as I'm concerned. Friday the 16th. Time? It will definitely be BYO stuff I think. Maybe we could have a little money pot for donations toward the meat. I can bake brownies and make a side dish. Depending on the number of people, maybe a few people could bring some baked beans and a veggie tray or something like it. John (b/f) will be in town, so people can bring their honeys/family if they want!

Whew! Long post!
I'll talk to ya soon DeJarra and everyone!
M.:D

ROLL CALL FOR SDN/CT BBQ!

email me at [email protected]. There are alot of the gang who haven't posted recently, probably b/c of login problems.

Hillary, Des, anyone from the CT thread or UHS Class of 2006 thread who CANNOT post, send an email. If you are able to post still, just post a message in one of the threads!

:) M.

Dear CTers,

I AM SO THERE!! See y'all on the 12th!

Peace,
Hillary

PS-- Mary, what kind of Feng Shui issues?? this is important if I'm going to study!

I just thought I'd bump this thread up a little higher.

So, classmates, where are all of you? I've been here over a week and I've only met a few of you.

Hello fellow Cter's,
I have not posted for awhile but have read this thread repeatedly. My name is David Ernst and i moved into 503 on Monday. So if any of my future classmates want to give me a holler, by all means knock on my door. By the way do you knknow where Catherine's place is?

Hello all/fellow CTers,
Crisis at the mothership!! The elevators are broken. The typical emergency stairwells have to be used to get out. Lots of angry people around! I've already planned my route for getting to orientation on time on Monday. Great timing, huh??

Fortunately it's Sunday and I don't have to be anywhere. I think that the CT management is going to be inundated with angry parents/residents tomorrow. Conveniently, they are not here today to experience the mess!!! They should refund us some rent! I would assume that most people are moved in....fortunately for the mgmt.

And what's up with the hot tub not working yet??????? Do you think that mgmt was just overall unprepared for the volume of residents that they were about to have? Was there just some defiant contractors? But I have to say, when you are living in rent this is not unusual. There's always someone who's not doing their job.

I will have to remember to bring everything I need to orientation, b/c there will be no quick way to retrieve it during the day!!

On the flip side, I have met some really really nice people in the past week via SLEP and just meeting people around CT.

Well, tomorrow's the big day!! I wish everyone the best of luck this year.

BBQ note: The event will run based on the # of responses! It will be understandable if the week's events and visiting with family/friends precludes at CT/SCN BBQ get together. I guess we'll play it by ear! (Sometimes that is best!!):D

Talk to ya soon, compadres!
M.

It appears that the elevators here at CT are finally up and running. Dr. Mary C what is your alternate route- as opposed to the elevators? What is everyone bringing to the orientation?
DJE4927

Hey DJE,
I'll take the SW stairs down to 2 then wind around till you get to the doors that dump you into the main lobby, right by the doors to the elevators. Although the elevators work somewhat, I may still take the stairs in the morning to alleviate any possibility that what I've worked toward for 3 years now gets flushed down the toilet because people don't like to work on Sundays!!

To orientation I will be bringing a bag and a notebook and pen. We'll probably need those things. Lunch is provided, and tomorrow only I think there are breakfast snacks.

Ciao!
M.

Dr. Mary C,
When I tried those stairs near the elevators to get to my floor yesterday evening, I was pretty miffed to find out (along with several other people) that they only go to the fourth floor! Are there other non-emergency stairs in this building?
Dje4927

I am assuming that my fellow ct'ers are walking to school tomorrow, what is the most direct route to get out of the gated parking on foot besides walking around the whole parking lot?
DJE4927

Good luck tomorrow everyone!!

Hey!
CT is divided into east and west halves, as you know. At each end of each hall is an "emergency" exit stairwell. Normally if you open the door an alarm will sound. However, the door at the southwest end is open to use--the alarm won't sound. Take the stairs down to 2. You will be in the west part of the building where all the fire offices are, etc. There is a door to your right when you get out of the stairs. It will be locked. So you will have to turn left a little then right, then walk down a long hall, turn right and then left and you'll see a room with Coke machines. Right there is a set of double doors that leads out to the lobby right by the cow. Bingo! Good luck! Get an early start!

Also, to get out of the gated lot, there is a gate to the left of the entrance when you are leaving the building. Over by the back of Chubby's restaurant. Use your key card by touching it to the sensor on the left side of the gate. It's attached to one of the bars. The gate SHOULD unlock for ya. (should being the operative word here).

BBQ info!! Check out the posters around CT. Courtesy of Jim on the 8th floor. Thanks Jim!! I'm not going to give details here for security reasons, but I'm sure I'll see most of you at school this week. I'm assuming Jim's in our class, but honestly I don't know for sure.

M.

I just wanted to thank Dr. Mary C for all of her insightful posts.

DJE,
It's always a pleasure!!:D Hope I helped somehow.

I can't believe school starts on Monday. I just keep telling myself to breathe and relax, that I am about to start studying everything that makes up the essence of a human, and that's why I'm here.:)

I have met SO many nice people. What a great class. I will, however, be keeping my personal space about me. And when it's appropriate, study with my new friends.

The W.C. ceremony was very nice. I think we all had a good time. I think it's a great way to start our new careers. The speakers were good, too. I liked the Alumni Assoc. President's talk. I think he made everyone in the room feel good.

Well, gonna go wake up the b/f. Poor baby, he's tired!!!!

Ciao!
M.
