Hi all! was having a convo tonight with some fellow dental students...have you ever heard or do you know of a DDS or DMD getting an MBA (or not) and eventually going into hospital administration (If so, is it more common if you're a dual degree OMS)? CEO or CFO? Or the like? We were all curious as we were reading some asda stuff, thought I'd try find em an answer!! thanks😎

I know two dentists with MBAs...but I don't know if they got them before or after dental school. Both of them are private practice clinic administrators, meaning they own multiple practices (one has 3 the other has 6 as of 2 years ago)

In order to own and manage a dental practice you have to have a dds/dmd and you can become quite successful opening practices and hiring associates to staff these places

I've never heard of a hospital administrator who was a dentist...don't think that would work

CFO's are usually accountants so it would have to be a MBA/CPA/DMD which is probably not gonna happen (too much schooling and very different fields.) I also dont believe hospitals have CEOs they usually have a Board of Directors or Administrators. Either way I dont know if that can happen, but an MBA will literally do nothing for your work as a dentist. Most of those classes are meant for a corporate environment and will not help in private practice. If you really want to make sure you run your business properly I suggest going to a good Tax Lawyer and CPA for your books and records. While its good to try to cut costs and do things yourself, you waste time on things you have no clue about instead of working on patients and making $$$$ the way you were trained as a dentist.

Put it this way, CEOs dont fix their own plumbing. They know opportunity cost and the fact that they can earn more money while someone else is fixing their indoor plumbing.

My hospital has a CEO...i think a number of them do actually

And i really don't think it would matter what the training was...dentists just aren't at hospitals...people who run hospitals are either former MDs, or people coming from business school...and with the conglomeration of hospitals into huge networks these days i'm guessing it's more and more business people

So a dentist COULD become a hospital CEO with the proper schooling, but it would have nothing to do with his dental training...the more i talk about this the more absurd i think it is...back to calculating anion gaps

So looks like you need an MPA which makes sense. An MBA wouldn't add any value to a hosp.

Not that this website is at all reputable but here is an excerpt from the very website you provided:
"How do Hospital CEOs get to where they are?
In studying this list of “20 New Hospital CEOs to Know”, it seems that most of the CEOs have a couple things in common:

They served as COOs of hospitals before. COO, the Chief Operating Officer, delegates day to day operations and reports to the CEO, who is usually too busy to review production quotas and operations daily.
They held a Masters in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or Nursing from an accredited university.
They held previous positions in strategic management, business and executive leadership. (Meaning medical expertise isn’t all CEOs need to have!)
They had about 15 or more years of experience in healthcare before they became the CEOs of major hospitals. (Patience is a must.)

for goodness sake wired- please stop talking out of your arse about things you know nothing about."

as a side note, i think sublimazing's post makes the most sense (but im no expert).

Wow I guess I'm not smart like you to use google and claim to be superior. Very "smart" move and very respectful too 😉

When you say have dentists do you mean they have priviledges or they are full time employees? Plenty of dentists have hospital priviledges...usually that just consists of a few hundred bucks and a lot of paper work...I would be surprised if these were hospital employees

You would likely need to be a full time hospital employee who gradually moves over to the administration side of things over the course of your career. Hospitals, like academics, have lots of internal politics so you would probably need to make a career out of it if you want to get to the top of the food chain. I doubt you can just "apply" to be a CEO of a hospital with nothing more than a DDS + MBA. I would also guess they prefer MDs over a DDS when it comes to filling administrative positions but that could also be because there are so few dentists in the hospitals compared to MDs.

Im not interested in getting into an arguement with you and hijacking this thread. I will not comment on this thread after this. But, to prove my point: I used the website that YOU PROVIDED. You gave a link to a website and then said:
"So looks like you need an MPA which makes sense. An MBA wouldn't add any value to a hosp".
You allude that the website you give proves your statement. Again, the quote I gave was from the website YOU provided.

I never claimed to be superior or smarter. Thats what you got out of it, which is fine. More importantly, I wasn't disrespectful. I didn't call you names and I didnt call you stupid. Heck, I even said 'please'.

To OP- I appologize for getting off topic.
