I think we can all agree that the cerec 3D is pretty cutting edge. My question is, what do you think is in the future of dentistry. Do you think all labratory work will someday be automated by in-office machines? Does anyone know of any upcoming technologies that have not been released yet? Thanks.

I think computer informatics and CAD/M will be increasing popular in future offices. In newer clinics digital radiology, and electronic patient files are already replacing films and paper files. I've only been to one office with a Cerec as it is a very expensive machine. However, if you do a lot of crown/bridge work then i suppose it'd be a good investment.

Cerec's are neat technology, no doubt about it. However for crown and bridge at high levels, you can't beat a good ceramist. Your margins will be much "tighter" (Cerec's often run about 100 micrometers and really rely on the resin cement to close and seal them) than a lab tech created PFM (margings are often 20 to 40 micrometers). Plus, the esthetics, especially with respect to incisal tranlucency and subtle shade variances are far, far superior when a ceramist stacks the porcelain verses as machine milled unit.
