Was wondering if there's any benefit to CEREC other than time savings - Is the digital rendering more accurate than an impression? Also, do labs make all porcelain crowns? Or is it always going to be porcelain fused to medal from a lab?
Thanks
CEREC is a closed ecosystem on it's own (although it's trying to open up more), there are advantages and disadvantages to the CEREC system, digital impression systems, and traditional impressions.
Benefit to the CEREC: Same day dentistry, seamless integration of digital impression, design, and milling. The biggest strength is not the digital impression itself, but the ease of use, the automatic designs, and the speed of milling. If your crown breaks, it's an easy remill. If there's a problem with fit, it's easy to fix, no need to send back to lab. I'm still not sold on the primescan. I don't think it's as good as 3shape's offering and I think it's overpriced for what it is. Maybe the rep just wasn't convincing, but he was full of excuses why the primescan wasn't in it's "prime" that day. Trios Element 2 is not that great either. The head is still too damn bulky. I know because I own all these scanners except the primescan. Even got a 2nd omnicam system to keep up with demand.
Downside to the CEREC: It's a closed system. The omnicam is still weak when it comes to scanning full arches. 3shape's scanner is far superior and more accurate. Staining/characterization is still a PITA and I'd rather send that off to the lab than do it myself (or trust my assistants to do it).
3shape's problem is moreso software stability. Lots of crashes, have to learn the workarounds
iTero is primarily for invisalign. Nothing else. It's more difficult and sluggish compared to 3shape's solution. If Align didn't cut 3shape off, I'd happily use 3shape for invisalign scans.
Sending impressions to lab is mostly a thing of the past. If I have to send off cases to the lab, I use my 3shape scanner because it's the easiest and fastest way.
Edit: I forgot to add in that CEREC is superior in design because it can crank out good designs with minimal intervention and it's so easy to use that assistants don't really need formal training in the system.
